A Good Thing Not Easy To Start: Creative Nonfiction Prompt #48
source
When I was young, my mother used to tell me that starting a good thing is not easy but you must put effort into it.
There was a professional program that I had in mind to do and there was no money to finance it because I have a passion for education. I had to hustle to save money but the money I got was not enough to start it.
The first year was gone, the second year gone and I could not save money to start the program. "Ah! What can I do?" I asked myself.
Then I remembered what my mother told me before she died. "If you want to begin something, start with whatever you have. Don't wait for anyone to save you, save yourself. People might not help you but help yourself to keep your dreams alive and continue to direct prayers to God. Along the line, he will open the door of blessing to you to accomplish your dreams.
However, I started the program with a little money that I had with the hope that things would be fine with me. Though I was in higher institutions already doing my academic program. I was one hustle to pay part of my tuition fees while my elder sister used to support me with food items.
Meanwhile, there was a particular diet that I failed the Quantitative Technique paper and I was the one who taught those who passed the paper. It was the only paper that remained in that stage before I could qualify and sat for it more than three times.
One day, I sat under a tree on campus thinking about my life. Many things came to my mind. "Should I drop this professional program and face my academic program? What should I do?"
I was on this, one hand tapped my shoulder from the back. And this person was unknown to me. He said to me that your attention is needed in the office.
Which office? I query him.
"Please, I will not go to any office unless you mention the name of the person who sent you to me." I was saying it with brown eyes.
Later, "he said Dr. Adewoyin asked me to invite you to his office."
Oh! He is the one. Okay, I will be there.
When I got there, he said what is bothering you? How far is your program? I saw you under the tree when I was passing by. Please take things easy!
I was wondering. Why is this man asking many at a time?
He was curious to know what I was going through. And I said nothing! I just wanted to hide things from him.
Later, Dr. Adewoyin said okay, "I understand. But let me share my experience with you. When I was writing professional papers, I failed the Practice of banking that was when my mother joined her ancestors and I could not assimilate anything. But I sat for it more than three times before I qualified for Associate membership. Today, I am a fellow member. One thing that made me happy about you is that you have taken bold steps and I don't want you to be discouraged."
As he was saying it. I said that I failed one paper, Sir.
Dr. Adewoyin nodded.
"So because you failed your mood changed like that. It is normal. You are not a failure but only those people who can not retake the paper are failures. You have tried. For you to sit for it, it is something. You won! Please, don't relent in continuing with the program and I assure you that you will make it."
That was how I left his office. However, I was thinking about how to get the money that I could use to register for the exam if I sit for it again.
One day, I was playing with my phone and it was ringing. Then, I picked up the phone. "Hello, Who is this? Ah! It is you Adewumi."
"Yes, I am the one calling. How are you? Have you registered for this diet?" Adewumi asked.
I responded. "No, I am yet to register. I don't have money to register."
She said don't worry, I will do something to help. That was how she sent the money to me to register for the examination and I passed the paper that was difficult for many people to pass. When it was time to pay for the induction fee, I did not have the money to pay but Dr. Adewoyin stood by me to raise the money.
Afterward, I returned to the school. Dr. Adewoyin said congratulations! If you have any dreams, start it and back it up with the prayers. God will make a way where there is no way.
The end
Wow! This is just wow! And the ending part nailed the whole story down - if you have any dreams, start it and back it up with prayers. I love this words
And your mothers words are so encouraging, whatever we want to do there's need to put efforts in it if not, accomplishing it will be impossible
Again, we don't have to wait until we have it plenty before we start, it is important that we start with what we have at the moment and watch things work out
I can't end this without mention Dr. Adewoyin, of course he is a good man and he contributed to your growth.
If only you had given up then you would have become a total failure but the good news is that you won because you were able to stand up and take the exams again
Yes, it was motivation from the people that made me successful. Thank you for reading my piece. I appreciate it.
You are welcome ☺️
A diet is a fasting period of one type or another. Your interpretation seems to be something other than the actual meaning:
The examination usually takes place twice a year. The months of April and October. Each month, we used to call it the April diet and the October diet.
