Un ser hermoso, [Zingtober] SUN.
Today on the 9th I decided to tackle the word “sun” with a unique interpretation: a grass raccoon. Here’s a little step-by-step process from initial sketch to final drawing.
Step 1: Conceptualization and Initial Sketch
The first step in any illustration is conceptualization. For this project, I wanted to combine natural elements with a fantasy creature style. I imagined a grass raccoon covered in grass, with details that evoked the energy and brightness of the sun.
I started with a pencil sketch in my sketchbook. I drew the basic shape of the grass raccoon, making sure it had a dynamic stance. I added details like pointy ears, a fluffy tail, and big expressive eyes.
Step 2: Refining the Sketch
Once I was satisfied with the initial sketch, I proceeded to refine it. I used a thinner pencil to outline the shapes and add additional details. At this stage, I focused on the grass elements that would cover the grass raccoon’s body, drawing leaves and blades of grass that intertwined with its fur. I also sketched a radiant sun behind the grass raccoon, symbolizing the connection to the keyword “sun.”
Step 3: Inking
The next step was inking, a crucial part of the Inktober style. I used a black ink pen to outline the drawing, starting with the outer lines and then working on the inner details. Inking requires precision and patience, as any mistakes are hard to correct. I made sure to vary the thickness of the lines to add depth and dimension to the drawing.
Step 4: Shading and Details
With the inking complete, I moved on to shading. I used hatching and stippling techniques to create shadows and textures, bringing the grass raccoon to life. Shading is essential to highlight the different textures, such as the fur and leaves, and to give a sense of volume and three-dimensionality.
Step 5: Final Touches
Finally, I added the finishing touches. I went over the drawing looking for areas that needed more detail or correction. I added some highlights to the grass raccoon's eyes and leaves to simulate sunlight. I also reinforced the lines of the sun in the background to make sure it stood out and complemented the grass raccoon.
