Beer Tasting: Ottakringer Wiener, SteenHuffel Palm & Yakima IPA

avatar

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

Today is scorching hot. The roads are jammed with tourists making their way to the beach. The weather report predicts a slight cooldown next week. Nevertheless, Monday is still far off. It's crucial to stay in the shade, stay hydrated, and refrain from physical exertion.
Unless you count opening the ice-cold beers in my fridge as physical activity! ;) 😜

Today is the 372nd #beersaturday, and of course, I'll do my best to give you the best possible introduction to the beers I have to taste today. I have an international selection: one beer from Austria, one from Belgium, and one from Slovakia. It will be interesting.
Let's go in order. First, we will go to the nearest neighbor.

🍻 😎 🍻

Ottakringer Wiener Original

Brewed by Ottakringer, Wiena, Austria.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.3 ABV, IBU N/A.
It's Vienna lager or Amber lager-style beer, with a smooth maltiness and moderate bitterness.

What do the Master Brewers say?

This creation from our brewmaster is based on a 100-year-old recipe of Ottakringer and will definitely make the heart of all beer lovers beat faster. This historic beer composition made with Viennese malt, captivates with its striking, amber reflections. The Wiener Original has a fine nutty note, and a flavour that transcends into an elegant malt aroma. The Wiener Original leaves a distinct yet gentle bitter after-taste.

🍺

As the amber beer, with its average head, releases the aroma of prunes, a sip glides down the throat with a pleasing smoothness. On the palate, the sweetness of the malt, the caramel notes, the nuttiness, and the discreet hop bitterness unfold, creating a delightful taste experience.
The bitterness of the hops lingers in the aftertaste for a while, but everything else disappears.

It is a very drinkable and tasty beer. It is obvious that the traditional recipe is worth something if it is not changed. It is a very good lager, above average. I would easily and happily drink another one. Unfortunately, it won't be in my fridge. I got it from a friend who bought it in Vienna.

🍻 😎 🍻

Steenhuffel Palm Belgian Amber

Brewed by Brouwerij Palm (Swinkels Family Brewers), Steenhuffel, Londerzeel, Flemish Brabant, Belgium.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.2% ABV, IBU 18.
It's a Belgian Amber ale-style, they say, a complex ale with a delicious blend of malt richness, dark fruit flavors, and spicy elements.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Palm Ale has long been one of Europe’s top-selling specialty beers. Made with English hops, French Barley, and Belgian yeast, Palm represents the best of European beer-making traditions. It’s the roasted Champagne Malt which gives Palm its amber color, but without being heavy. Also available bottle-conditioned as Palm Hergist. Sold as Palm outside of Europe.

🍺

Most Belgian beers I've tasted have complex (read lots of ingredients) flavors. Sometimes, I like them, and sometimes, I don't. I got this one at Kalea BeerBox.

The beer is clear, light brown, and amber. There is little head, but it is persistent. The first sip goes down the throat smoothly, dominated by malt with hints of caramel and a discreet taste of some spices - coriander? Maybe cinnamon? Or both? I don't know because it is very faint. The bitterness is there but more shyly in the background.
In the aftertaste, everything quickly disappears except for the slight sweetness of the malt.

It's a drinkable beer but without any excess. It's balanced, nothing extreme. Given its Belgian origin, I was expecting stronger and more pronounced flavors, which were not there. There's no hop bitterness, either.
But okay, I would have had no problem drinking a few of them if there was nothing else.

🍻 😎 🍻

Let's go to Slovakia!

Kaltenecker Yakima IPA

Brewed by Pivovar Kaltenecker, Rožňava, Slovakia.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.8% ABV, IBU 50.
It's IPA-style beer, hop-forward and bitter, mainly with fruit notes.

What do the Master Brewers say?

It is a semi-dark extra bitter yeasty India Pale Ale, a top-fermented beer that is cold hopped with hops from the Yakima Valley (Washington State). The aroma is citrus, the balanced bitterness is very pleasant and typical of this beer style. The beer won a silver medal in the 2016 Dublin Craft Beer Cup. Malts: Weyermann Pale Ale, Münchner, Carared. Hops: Amarillo, Mosaic cold hopping.

🍺

This Slovak brewery is quite solid. I have tried a few beers, and they were very good. I am also interested in how they brew IPA beers.

The beer is light brown, clear, and with little head. It has no particular odor and goes down the throat smoothly. The palate develops a bitterness that prevails but is not strong, as expected in an IPA. Hints of grapefruit and herbs - I think it's sage - are present.
In the aftertaste, an assertive bitterness prevails for a while, and everything else disappears.

It's a drinkable beer, and as I am a fan of IPA beers, I expected more, but this is something average. The bitterness comes more from the bitter herbs than the hops. I also miss the more pronounced citrus notes.
I got it from a friend who was in Slovakia.
It's unavailable here, but I can buy better IPA beers here.

That's it for today. The best one for me was the Vienna Lager.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to as I write this and taste the beer?
Nothing from my yesterday's #newtunes post as usual. I stumbled upon a band playing neo-psychedelia and sixties nostalgia, and I just bought the album on Bandcamp because it's amazing to me. Now I have it on repeat. I recommend it!

Don’t really know about the other ones, but I do know Palm! Pretty well even, used to drink it quite often years ago. Palm is a bit as a regular lager, but just a bit more than that. But it doesn’t come near the more typical beers, such as the triples and those.

I've tried quite a few Belgian beers, but this one didn't really impress me. Belgian beers usually have more complex flavors and aromas, which I didn't get with this one.
But it is definitely drinkable. !BEER

!INDEED that’s what I meant, it’s absolutely drinkable, but it’s nothing special, not at all. There’s plenty more great beers here!
Ever tasted anything from Westmalle?

Yes, I agree that it is healthier not to drink alcohol, but what do I want when I live in a society drowning in alcohol?

I don't think drinking alcohol is necessarily bad if consumed in moderation. In fact, I know that in some cold countries, alcohol can be helpful in keeping people warm and surviving the harsh climate. 😀🤗

A shame about the Yakima!
As for the weather please pass some sun and warmth to the UK. This has been an awful summer!
