Beer Tasting: Saso Mange Choppy APA
Hello, beer lovers! π»
How did you start the New Year? With fun, work, or otherwise?
We didn't have any megalomaniac parties, just dinner, greetings, and a short walk and that was it.
But we were in Rijeka, Croatia, a bigger city, a few days ago. We went for a walk in the Korzo promenade, where there was usually always something going on, looking for that feeling of festivity and celebration we were missing at home.
But it was nothing special. I don't know, maybe it wasn't the right day, Friday was the last working day for most of us (29.12), but people gathered energy to celebrate.
It was warm outside, 14 degrees Celsius, which is remarkable for the last days of December, last year it was around zero at the same time, there is no snow anywhere anyway, so maybe it will surprise us this week.
But, those were just my thoughts about the beer I tasted there, and now, for 340 #beersaturday I share them with you.
It's a custom here to drink hot mulled wine outside at this time of the year, but I opted for a beer when we stopped at one of the stalls.
I noticed a bottle that I had never seen before and, as befits any beer lover, I had no choice but to order it and taste it. Who knows when there will be such an opportunity again?
Saso Mange Choppy APA
Brewed by Saso Mange Brewery, Zagreb, Croatia.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.5% ABV, IBU 33.
It's APA, American Pale Ale, or West Coast Pale Ale style beer. Average strength, more hoppy and fruity than English ales.
What do the Master Brewers say?
Choppy APA is yellow to light orange and has a persistent fluffy white foam. Intense fruity, tropical-citrus aroma and flavor are at the forefront of this American-style beer. Three types of malt give the beer a harmonious background. The beer is dry-hopped with Citra and Centennial hops, which impart a tropical fruit and citrus flavor. The aftertaste has a medium bitterness of morning grapefruit. Refreshing, light to moderate body, suitable for all circumstances.
It was the first time I had heard of this brewery and it would be a sin if I didn't taste it when I had the chance.
The beer was golden in color, clear, the head average, and creamy. It had no particular smell. It went down the throat smoothly, and I immediately tasted a pleasant bitterness and aroma of tropical fruits, mostly citrus, and grapefruit, with very minimal malt sweetness.
The bitterness of hops and grapefruit remained in the aftertaste for some time.
It was refreshing and delicious. Nice bitterness, citruses, nothing extreme, nothing overdone in any way, very harmonious.
Not available here, but, hey, next time I'm in Rijeka, I'll look for it.
I was tempted to have another, but I drove back and one small beer is the limit if you get stopped by the police. 15 minutes on the motorway and we're home.
A few more pictures from a walk along Korzo, the main promenade in Rijeka. Here is the town's New Year fir tree. As I mentioned, there was no big crowd at all.
Here, where there is this statue mentioning that Rijeka was the European Capital of Culture in 2020, it was completely blank.
And what am I listening to as I write this? Something from my first of the year #newtunes post. A song that seems familiar, like you've heard it somewhere before, but you don't know where.

What a pity it was only bottled, huh? ;) Cheers!
Maybe it's better that way, because if it was on tap I don't know who would drive home :)
