Beer Tasting: Ugly Duckling Oatmeal Stout and Waterloo Double Brune

(Edited)

Hello, beer lovers! 🍻

How are you? It's been very sunny here for three days, and I've been outside all day, doing firewood. Yes, even though it is spring, they are now preparing firewood for next winter. I am pretty tired and thirsty.
And for 405 #beersatturday, I'll have a beer or two.

I've had a Belgian and a Slovenian bottle waiting for me in the fridge all day, and I'll be happy to share the beer sensations with you.

First, the one with less alcohol.

🍻 😎 🍻

Ugly Duckling Oatmeal Stout

Brewed by Crazy Duck Brewery, Ε½iri, Slovenia.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 5.7% ABV, IBU N/A. It's stout-style beer.

What do the Master Brewers say?

Ugly Duckling is a very special type of stout. Like the black duck in its litter, this beer stands out from the rest in style. It is a lighter stout, and the addition of oatmeal makes it creamy, drinkable, and full-bodied. The roasted barley ensures the flavor does not wear off, leaving a lingering and strong roasted aftertaste. In most cases, this beer is also liked by those who do not generally like dark beers.

I won't say I don't like dark beers, but I prefer light ones. I have tried a few beers from this brewery, and they were fine.

The beer is cloudy, dark brown, almost black, with a bit of head that disappears quickly. It goes down the throat smoothly, and I taste a slight bitterness and a discreet oatmeal taste. There is no sweetness.
The slight bitterness of the roasted barley lingers in the aftertaste for some time.

This is a very drinkable and tasty beer. I was expecting something different, more pronounced roast flavors and some chocolate or coffee, but no. The flavors of roasted barley and oat flakes are very harmonious, not extreme. There are few ingredients, but just enough for a delicious beer.
It is available here in local shops, and at least one bottle will be in my fridge.

🍻 😎 🍻

As I mentioned, I was into firewood. A few weeks ago, I had to cut down two old apple trees in the orchard because they were already hollow. Since the wood must not go to waste, today, I prepared them for firewood for the central heating. I have induction heating panels, but my mother still has wood central heating.

It was still quite hot, and I only drank water, so I couldn't wait for the evening to taste some beer :)

🍻 😎 🍻

Waterloo Double Brune

Brewed by Waterloo Beer, Waterloo, Belgium.
Bottle, 0.33 l, alcohol 8.0% ABV, IBU 40. It's Belgian Dubbel-style beer.

What do the Master Brewers say?

This top-fermented dark beer is brewed with roasted malts. The secondary fermentation in the bottle gives it its powerful and pleasant character. The nose is quite complex, powerful, and full-bodied with earthy notes of old wood. First aromas are powerful (alcohol), and spicy (wood) yet always well balanced, leading up to a pleasantly caramelized finish. The round mouthfeel and roasted malty flavor reinforce the aromas of coffee and toffee (molasses and caramelized butter).

Another dark beer today. But OK.

The beer is dark brown, and the head is average, creamy, and long-lasting. It smells of caramel. A sip goes down the throat smoothly, and I taste the bitterness of roasted malt and the sweetness simultaneously in the mouth. However, it fades into the background the next moment, and the caramel flavor comes to the fore.
A discreet bitterness and caramel linger in the aftertaste for some time.

Another delicious dark beer! Tasty and juicy, complex and harmonious, you can hardly feel the alcohol. I would have liked to have another one, but I don't. It wouldn't be waiting in the fridge; I'd drink it :)
It is not available here locally except by order from a specialist shop.

🍻 😎 🍻

And what am I listening to when tasting beers and writing this? Something from Fridays #newtunes. Melodic post-rock with strong beats.

I see Waterloo and think of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and that is the one I would take. I do like caramel after all!

Great choices.

Yes, this brewery is keeping this tradition alive. And the beer is delicious, too.

Well, that's funny. I don't taste a lot of bitterness. Maybe because of the alcohol sweetest?

Wow, I am impressed by the variety of beer that you are having. A very good mix. I don’t have that many variety over here.

That’s right, need researchers like us. But you have more variety πŸ˜‚ I have limited choices thus my list is almost the same. High taxes and duties here.

They both look delicious! I found a local grocer who is liquidating local craft beer in cans and bottles. I've been sampling some exotic IPA's, like espresso and chi tea infused Ales. !BBH

Both were very good. It's nice from a local grocery - a good idea. Unfortunately, it is not possible here; we don't have local groceries anymore, they don't survive. We have only big Europe chains, aka Lidl, Hofer, Spar, Leclerc, Eurospin... !BEER
