Splinterlands Art Contest Week 302: Undead Archer

A creative necromancer can easily double the power of his archer units...

This is my entry for the weekly Splinterlands Art Contest found HERE

I think it might have been the skeletal archers in the 4th edition D&D Monster Manual that had four arms and wielded two bows simultaneously. Unless it was an "archer demon" I can't remember. But I thought it was a great idea, so now here it is in the Splinterlands fan art.

The Undead Archers of the Death Splinter are famously resourceful when they run out of arrows. Teeth, bones, and claws can all be loosed from their inventive bows, many of which contain poisons that can cripple the living. In a rare display of Dark Eternal valor, an Undead Archer sometimes sits on the battlefield and begins breaking its own bones, firing them one by one toward his enemies. This is known as Bones’ Last Stand

Created in Clip Studio Paint Pro on a Microsoft Surface Pro 7+. Here is the timelapse video:

And here is the step-by-step drawing process:

Step One: Rough draft. I use a 40 px pastel pencil to block out the rough shape

Step Two: Line art. I just use the For Effect pen from Clip Studio to make lines that are sort of ribbon-like

Step Three: Hide the rough layer and create some splashes of color

Step Four: With the line art layer set as the reference, use the colorize feature to convert those color scribbles into this:

Step Five: Duplicate the color layer and use the airbrush to add some shading and highlights. I used Tonal Correction on this layer to darken it and change it from purple to green. I wanted a more sinister purple color, but it looked more fairy-ish. Which is why if you watch the time lapse video, the drawing looks pink almost all the way until the end.

Step Six: Glow layer. Create some glowing pinpoints for eyes and some magical mist and arrow shots

Step Seven: Sign my initials so you know that this Undead Archer was really made by Matt S. Law and not some random hacker that uploaded to my account

Step Eight: Profit!
