¿A qué temía?
—me decía Gloria, —¡ayúdame!
—Preguntaba, nadie me daba respuestas.

Lurking shadows

Gloria called me several times during the day, but that work meeting prevented me from answering. So when the clock chimed seven o'clock, I went to the bathroom to calmly read the messages. I had 12 calls and three voicemails, just telling me that he needed my help, something was wrong.
I called, I made several attempts, but the device told me that it could not locate that number, I put my phone away and with some concern I slipped away, to avoid the goodbyes.
On the way I stopped only to get gas and buy half a bottle of liquor. Now to ride the 12 minutes I needed to get home. I hope all is well at home and Gloria was able to solve the problem she had. The night was cloudy so it seemed darker.
Everything was quiet when I arrived, one of the closest neighbors had the music very loud. When I went to insert the key, I noticed that the door was unlocked.
—Gloria, are you here?

Our house was big for the two of us, we had three children, the youngest died in a traffic accident and the others went to the capital and the relatives came somewhat sporadically.
—Gloria!
I felt a slight shiver, as if I sensed someone's gaze. I went upstairs, upstairs was our room and the room of the son we had lost, and a terrace-like living room with a large window through which we could see a long and lonely street.
I entered the room, there was a mess and I did not see Gloria, only her phone was on the bed, the nerves began to create images in my mind.
—What happened here?... Gloria!
To my mind came my son when I lifted him from the asphalt, his body flaccid and bathed in blood, the motorcycle was in pieces on the side of the road. I screamed like a madman, until I passed out, my wife blamed me for having bought him the motorcycle, then we never spoke of that event again.
—Gloria, where are you?
I went to my son's room, everything was in order, there was a billboard with photographs that illustrated my son's chronology, including the one where I carried his lifeless body, Gloria had put it there so that I could not forget that tragedy, that's why I almost never went in.
I looked everywhere to see if everything was in order, the only thing that seemed to have moved was an old trunk, it was half open. I went and opened it suddenly, a scream left me paralyzed, I almost fell from the shock, the lights flickered and everything was in darkness.
—Gloria, it's you...
She rushed at me crying, she squeezed me so hard that she almost cut my air, her heart seemed to pump with a lot of pressure.
—What happened to you honey?
She was terrified, she only moaned and cried, I was going to take her to our room, but she squeezed me tightly and shook her head negatively.
The lights came back on, but they flickered insistently, in the middle of the darkness I looked at her face transformed by fear, that made that nervous cold give me muscle spasms, I felt cramps and a fear that I could not explain.
Why was Gloria in this state, what was she afraid of? She was just looking at me and with that attitude of telling me not to leave her alone.
The lights flickered again, a cold wind was coming in through the terrace, Gloria started to cry and clung more to my body. She stammered a few words.
—Here he comes again.
—Who?
She clung tighter, it was hard to breathe. I looked towards the door to see who it was, I only saw shadows moving, they seemed to walk, one of them grabbed another one, lifted it up and swallowed it. The noise of the wind was very loud, like desperate screams.
I saw the shadow coming towards the room, it was projected immensely on the wall. I grabbed Gloria and lifted her up, I ran out. I don't know how I got so much strength to take her down the stairs, the lights started to flicker again as if something was short-circuiting, I slipped and Gloria's scream and mine merged into one, the shadows fell on us.
—Here it comes! —said Gloria, —help me!
I was disoriented and in a lot of pain, I couldn't see in the darkness, I only felt a cutting cold on my back. I heard someone come in at that moment.
I groped and searched for Gloria, I could barely see how the house was being consumed by the fire. Someone grabbed me and pulled me out into the open air. I looked for Gloria with my eyes.
—Where is Gloria? —I asked, no one gave me answers.
—Calm down, sir, the ambulance is coming, please calm down!
—Here it comes! — I said. I saw a shadow coming over me, her face was uncovered: a smile of triumph was what it reflected. I know that face.
She opened her mouth, let out a sibilant whisper: "that's my revenge" and disappeared into the shadows.

I could only shout:

—Glory!
There I felt I was bleeding to death. Before I faded away, I saw his gaze, but, this time there was no fear in his eyes, but, something else... a shadow of satisfaction.

Wow, a haunting thriller. I don't know which direction to look for the solution to this one. The shadows...one raising up the other and consuming it was a heart stopper. I want to say the culprit was his wife. But in the end, I was stumped.

Thanks for sharing this tantalizing story. It kept me hooked from start to finish. Good luck in the contest.

Take care.

When I thought about how to develop the story, I remembered that during those nights of wind and rain one watched how the movement of the trees cast shadows according to how the branches were shaken by the wind and created different figures that one associated with evil characters.
Thank you for your kind comment. Regards.

You are certainly correct in that aspect. The shadows made scary figures that frightened me as a child. What a unique inclusion in your description, especially one shadow eating the other. Great interpretation.

Thanks for the explanation. Take care.
