Our potted herb garden is coming along
Along with starting many vegetables we started some herbs as well. We decided to keep them close to the kitchen out on the deck in pots. We are growing basil, dill, sage and lavender. Once they get bigger we plan on using the leaves all the time while cooking. There is nothing better than fresh picked herbs for a meal, so I am really looking forward to them coming along. We cut a couple leaves off for our first meal, but will probably wait awhile to let them grow some more before we harvest any more.
The largest of the basil have their own pot, and then we spread out the smaller ones in other pots around the deck.
We also planted one arugula plant, and a celery plant. Not really herbs but still useful in cooking.
Most of the other pots are all basil, many kinds of it. Lemon, large Italian, genovese, purple dark opal, thai and sweet. So we have a lot of it and looking forward to seeing their different flavor profiles.
We had more grouped together, but once they started growing we split them up into their own pots so they do not crowd each other too bad.
Using some of my 8 gallon smart pots that I usually grow my cannabis in, they work great.
The purple basil looks so cool, cannot wait for it to get bigger.
It is much smaller right now, we can see it next to some other basil as a comparison.
The sage is coming along nicely, we cut a few leaves off recently to cook with.
I believe this is dill, have not used it yet but planning on it.
Some of the basil plants are smaller than others, but all seem pretty happy. Since we transplanted them twice they now need a break again to start growing again. But I think with the bigger space to grow in they would rather have that in the long run.
Much of the English lavender I started as seeds are becoming little plants now. I hope to put these in the ground around the house eventually. I love the smell of the plants, and they are good for cooking with as well. Tagging @felixxx as I know they were curious about growing lavender from seed.
They have been transplanted twice now. I think I will need to put them in a 1 gallon pot next and keep them alive over the winter. Then they can go in the ground next year.
Just a little worried this year they may not be big enough to survive the harsh winters, so want to make sure they are big and strong before going in the ground.
There is about 20 of them. If I was to buy the plants I am planning on growing it would have cost a few hundred dollars. But instead just a few dollars for the seeds and a little time I will be at the same place.
I am going to start more seeds this winter, so I will have even more in a few years. Growing them this way seems to work well. Not every seed germinated, out of the 80 or so I started only 20 germinated. I put them in the fridge for a few months like it said I should so no idea why a little more than 20 percent actually germinated. But still I got many that did and I am happy with my $2 seed bag's yield.
Just need to make sure they get water every day unless the rains take care of that for me.
Some cheese ravioli, chicken and veggies we made recently. We used some sage and basil inside from the garden. We did not use much since the plants are still small but, in the future we plan on really zesting up the meals and maybe some pesto making too.
That's really awesome. I tried to grow some cilantro one time, but like most other plants I ended up killing it. I'm not even sure what I did wrong. I feel like stuff grows in the wild all the time on it's own so I shouldn't need to tend to stuff too much.

Hah yeah its funny how it does so good out in the wild but as soon as we try to cultivate it dies.. life is weird like that.
Wow dear friend, it's great to see your herb garden thriving very well. I've had my share of failed attempts with other stuff 😁 not easy. Sometimes it's just trial and error, but it's so rewarding when things finally start growing. Wishing you the best of luck
Thanks much, so true.. sometimes it is indeed trial and error. What does not work this year will be noted and will work to do things better next year.
Absolutely dear friend.... Never give up 🥰
How wonderful that you are growing your own aromatic herbs, it is the best thing you can do to season and perfume your homemade meals.
Green basils are one of those herbs that season and perfume red sauces very well, ideal to accompany a pasta dish or good pizza dough.
I love the assortment of herbs you are growing @solominer Successes
They sure are wonderful, we are really looking forward to using them more in the cooking we do. Oh nice, we will probably use it in some pasta and pizzas like you said.
thank you
I need to go and make research because some of these plants look exactly like grasses we used to clear off our farm. They're grasses and we don't use them for anything 😅
Yeah many of these plants look very similar to weeds, but if you squeeze the leaf it smells different from basic grass.. a good way to tell.
This is interesting 👌
Tulsi is really a very beneficial plant. Its advantages are such that a whole book can be written on it. I liked your words very much, that you plant plants yourself and also plant vegetables. Nowadays, the most widely used chemical is in vegetables. Which invites really serious diseases. @solominer
We are really looking forward to all the basil growing.
Doing our best not to use any chemicals on these plants, we wan to keep this growing process as clean as possible.
The fact that you carefully explained all herbs one after the other in this post is really something and they all look healthy.
Good job!
Thank you, I think its important to tell others what exactly I am growing.
Yeah, very very important.
Having your own fresh herb garden is so nice, just grab a bunch of fresh leaves and throw it in the pasta or barbecue, perfect! Will you grow any rosemary? They're very fragrant and perfect for lamb if you like them
It sure is, really looking forward to pulling some off and cooking with them soon enough. Just want the plants to get a little bigger before we start using more of them for spices.
Yep we got some rosmarino rosemary growing, its very small right now but hoping I can plant it soon and let it get bigger in the ground.
The plants you grew look great. We also grow basil, one of these plants. We planted its seedlings in the ground a few days ago. Have you considered growing mountain thyme? It adds great taste to dishes.
Thank you, oh nice.
Yeah I am growing Thyme as well. Maybe not the mountain variety but have some of the herb.
Aren't herbs just the best?
They seem to grow so quickly and a hearty and versatile in their ability to live in planters.
We have dill, cilantro, italian parsley, greek oregano, basil and thyme this year. Chives too if you count those.
Being able to pick and chops and use fresh herbs when you are cooking is so easy and awesome!
They sure are, makes every meal extra special.
Oh nice, your garden is looking good.

I suspect your unknown plant is yarrow, not dill…
Ah okay thanks! I am growing that too so it probably is, got the two mixed up.
Nothing like dishes cooked with garden fresh herbs, @solominer!
The cheese ravioli and chicken, carrots, broccoli, and red peppers with parmesan cheese is YUMMY!!! Bon appétit!

cIn my house, there are a lot of herbs and green vegetables hehe
Oh very nice, I see many things there I cannot grow due to my climate. But thats great you got some nice plants.
thank you . For a tropical country, plants grow very quickly
Your potted herb garden looks amazing! It’s wonderful to see how thriving and healthy your plants are. Growing your own herbs is so rewarding and adds such fresh flavors to cooking. Looking forward to seeing your garden's progress!
Much appreciated, we are indeed looking forward to the fruits of our labor collecting many of these herbs for cooking.
Will do another update when they get a little bigger.
I hope you enjoy your meals. When I planted some vegetables and it’s grow and when it is cooked by my mother and I eat it. I feel a different type of joy and happiness in my mind. I miss my mother cooked food. Anyway you are doing a great job. Keep it up. From your post I know that basil has different type of spacies, before I don’t know about that. In my country they are not available. Thank you for sharing your post.
Thanks they have been tasty, oh that is a nice thing to do with your mother. Cooking together is a nice activity to share.
Yep there are so many kinds of basil. The seed kit I bought came with them all.. If you have access to Amazon where you live you can maybe buy the same seed pack I got.
