Beer Saturday - Indio, the Red Ale with a Redskin
I'm actually doing it: though I never considered talking about merely beer all too postworthy, I decided to make a collection of all the beers of Mexico, that is, the once most available at the corner stores. I realize, there are lots of delicious microbrews around (such as this one), though by far not as extensive as I've seen in the US or Canada. However, my former colleague asked me to send him bottle caps of our local beers, as his friend is collecting them, so I thought I might as well introduce each beer a little bit. So here it is, the number one in my series, the Indio.
My Preferred Option
Usually when I want to buy a simple beer at a corner shop or a convenience store, out of all I tend to see if they have Indio. It's a tasty red ale, maybe a bit on the sweet side, but it certainly beats most others in flavor. Unless I'm on the coast, where I like to drink the most watered down brews.
Indio is made by the Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, formerly only Cauhtémoc, named after the last ruler of the Aztecs, who rose to power during the conquest after the death of his cousin Moctezuma, so as you can imagine, his reign did not last very long. His name means Soaring Eagle or Falling Eagle, as it is often interpreted in a typical case of nomen est omen. The image on the bottle is a corresponding Méxica warrior (maybe even Cauhtémoc himself). But to most customers around the turn to the 20th century, when the beer was first marketed, it simply was "the one with the indian on it," so soon the beer was rebranded as Indio. Today this beer, together with its brewery, is in foreign hands, owned by the Heineken conglomerate.
Beer Saturday
This post is trying to follow the guidelines laid out in @detlev 's Beer Saturday Challenge. It has three pics and more than 200 words relating to beer, and features the #beersaturday tag. Check it out, and post some of your favorite beer, if you like. There are some cool prizes you can win too! It is not required to post it on a Saturday, which is great, since I guess the last time zone on this globe entered Sunday about two hours ago.
Mexican beer, not a bad idea at all.
Enjoy it and have fun
Thank you!
