The long-awaited companion

The first night I got the package delivered, I couldn’t sleep well. I placed it right beside me, woke up at interval to see if it was still there, gave it a gentle rub, and then tried to sleep again. Don’t blame me. It’s what I’ve been trying to achieve for a very long time, but it kept getting shifted to a later date for some other urgencies. And I travelled all the way from Ikirun in Osun State to Lagos state before I could get it. Not because they couldn’t send it through a driver, but I preferred to be somewhere close to where the package was coming from.

In 2020, I needed to buy a laptop. I was in my finals, and I needed it for some practical courses, and for my final project. I also planned to take advanced graphics design course, but I was financially incapable of buying the system. Prior to 2020, I tried, but it was just impossible to save up for it.

After some businesses here and there, I was able to save up the sum of one hundred and twenty thousand naira to buy a Dell laptop. When I got the delivery, I couldn’t lift it. It was way too heavy. I asked the vendor who recommended the system why it was so heavy, and he replied, “that’s what your money could afford you”, and he didn’t tell a lie.

I knew that wasn’t what I wanted. It wasn’t my plan to buy a heavy laptop because my shoulders are way too tiny to lift heavy things. So, less than three months later, I sold it off, and used the money for something else. Then again, I was ‘laptopless’. Thanks to my friends who owned one, I used theirs to complete my project work, and the practical courses, however, my graphics design class was still hanging.

I tried again in 2021, but it was one of the roughest years I’ve ever lived, so the efforts towards saving up for it that year was an unintentional zero. However, I tried again the following year.

In 2022, I got reconnected to a friend who also sells gadgets. We talked about my need, and the specifications, most importantly, the weight. We discussed the price, and he was saying it’s over two hundred thousand naira. I ransacked through my savings, checked my bank apps, and all my fintech apps, I was about ten thousand naira short. But, somehow, within a week, I was able to raise the money, and yeah! I got the system. It was also a Dell laptop, but a lighter weight one with a stronger battery, keyboard light, and black. Everything looked so perfect just as I’ve dreamt of it. That’s why I couldn’t sleep the first night I got it, because it was a dream come true for me.

Although, by the time I got the system, I had lost the zeal to become a graphics designer. Now, I was ready to explore video editing. I got the software I needed installed, and began the journey, but it was looking too hard to follow through.

There were some side hustles I missed out on because I didn’t have a laptop, but it wasn’t too late when I got it. I picked up the hustle, and in no time, I was able to raise the money I used to buy the laptop even though it still went into some unplanned expenses.

It’s been more than two years since I bought the laptop, and even though I didn’t further in the path of graphics designing, or a video editor, I am doing well in data analytics, and my laptop has been and is still serving me well, even though it’s been coming up with some little faults lately. It's still the most expensive item I've bought so far.

All images are mine.

Congratulations on getting one that lasted well :) If the little faults get to be too much, back up all files then have it reformatted.

It's not too late to try graphics :) Even if you use a few hours, and post it in one of Hive's digital art communities

This is worth spending on because it will definitely make a lot of things easier for you. I believe you are doing well with your data analysis as well so no regrets saying goodbye to the graphics design thing.

Thanks for participating in the HN weekly prompt.
