A FIRST FOR ME ~ hand-feeding ~ SMAP ROUND 205

After watching a video I thought maybe I could pull this off.

A gentleman in a video that I just recently watched was feeding Black-capped Chickadees from his hand. He made several key points that needed to be followed if you were going to have any luck doing the same.

  • Constant supply of seed in the same location.
  • They must get used to your presence.
  • use black-oiled sunflower seeds.
  • must have Black-capped Chickadees in the area.
  • keep any movements to a minimum.

For the past several months the snow has been piling up. Rather than filling the bird feeders I've been shoveling off the front deck and scattering seed all around. Black-capped Chickadees have been feeding from the deck nonstop. I've spent hours observing them devour every morsel. It seemed to me that all of the suggestions he made I had been doing for a while.

After sitting quietly for several minutes with my gloves off, the freezing temps had me contemplating putting my gloves back on. Just about when I was going to give up a bird landed in my hand. The excitement had me forget about the numbness as one bird after another fed from my palm.

It was not easy to get the pictures, feeding with one hand and snapping off one picture after the next with the other hand was a challenge. I must have taken 100 pictures. After going through all of them I was delighted with some of the shots. I even caught the birds in flight just before landing.

I was surprised by the patience they showed as the next bird would be in the on-deck circle waiting for its turn to feed from my hand.

For the past several days the chickadees and I have become great friends. Within a few minutes, they now land, feed, and return in rapid succession. WHAT A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE!

Cold hands, warm heart I believe...

What an amazing time to spend with little friends trusting enough to feed from your hand. Gorgeous photos a keeper!

Birds call us some may enter the kitchen or close to remind us never tried hand feeding, well done, mission accomplished.

There were several different kinds of chickadees all over the deck but all of them except the black-capped ones flew off. This morning I had several feeding from my hand within minutes.
I hope they don't forget who I am while vacationing in March. 😁

If you not gone for too long they won't forget, will be waiting on your return for hand outs.... Enjoy your break away from the cold.

I'm glad I was able to get some pics of it all. When I tell our children about the experience I have proof.

A lovely post, and yeah taking action shots with one hand, while the other hand is busy, becomes an art after a while. Happy that you got things right.

The other day I snuck into the local zoo and spotted an albino Cheetah
It was the least I could do for him.

It turned out to be one of my best bird experiences. I thought that I would be able to snap the pics with my glove on. that didn't work. After half an hour or so, both hands were freezing.

Thanks for the tips, my friend!

I am sure that it was a great experience, and sometimes one has to suffer a bit to get the rewards.

I can feel the thrill of that experience. Happy little creature in the warm and nurturing hand of the feeder @thebigsweed. May you have more lovable feathered friends on your palm 😇😇

Thanks for stopping by.
I see that you have joined #hive just recently. Good luck to you.
I see that you stopped working to raise your children, good for you there's no more important job than raising a child.

Thank you @thebigsweed! Yes, I agree with you. That was the most gratifying decision I made in life. To be fully with our children while growing up is rewarding for me. I got to nurture them hands on and know them inch by inch which is a deprivation if half of my motherhood is spent at work. Thank you for coming by. Any new friends enjoying meal on your warm palm lately?

How very cool! And to get some good photos in the process! The chickadees are the boldest when I am filling feeders, coming to another as I work.

They sure are friendly. Robin and I will be sitting on the porch and they will perch just feet from us.

What a precious experience to share with the birds. I have yet to try that but I have chipmunks that will come up on my lap and take peanuts from my hands. I will have to try this with the chickadees.

I'll have to give that a try. We have those adorable little creatures feeding right along with the birds, but every time I approach them they run off.

It takes a little patience but they will trust you in time if they know you will offer them a treat.

What a great achievement of having their trust and feeding from the hand! Absolutely amazing and so wonderful. This is something I hardly can achieve yet.
Thank you for your lovely entry! 🙂

Missed seeing this! How awesome is that!
I've always wanted to try. When the temps warm up a bit next week I may attempt it!
