Feathered Friends - Show Me A Photo Contest Round 137 ~ Blue Jays, more than meets the eye.
When I saw the #SMaP for this week being corvids I was happy to see that the Blue Jay was part of this family. Before getting involved with one of my favorite communities #Feathered #Friends, I knew very little about birds. I knew they liked to fly, came in many colors, and that ducks liked to eat bread.
As a kid, my mom would take us to The Duck Pond which was the actual name for this small body of fresh water. Whenever we had a few slices of stale bread left in the bread draw we'd head to the pond which was just a few minutes away by car. Once you were at the water's edge and threw that first bit of bread in the water, the ducks swam to your location in force, quacking all of the way.
I'm not saying in any way that I'm now an expert, but I know a heck of a lot more about birds now, and I'm still learning. For example, when I saw the word corvids I must admit that I was lost, but since the Blue Jay was in this group I was good to go.
Wanting to know something about this family of birds I typed corvids into the search bar and here was the first thing I read. CORVIDS/CORVIDAE In colloquial English, they are known as the crow family or corvids. When I read this I realized just how much I still didn't know. I must admit that I felt a little foolish.
After that long-winded overture, let's take a look at a few Blue Jays that stop at our place on a regular basis for a good meal.
The pair in the feeder must be a couple, while the one on the top of the feeder seems to be wondering where its mate is.
Once these beautiful birds find a mate,
they stay hitched for life, TILL DEATH DO US PART.
Is this Blue Jay seeing a reflection of itself?
The next two pictures I was saving for a possible future #SMaP,
SHOW ME A BIRD'S BOTTOM,
If I had a bottom as picturesque as this guy I'd also be showing it off, NOT.
These next two pics were cool to capture.
I thought that once the jay grabbed a Sunflower seed,
it just swallowed the whole thing.
While zooming in on this guy I realized that it had a death grip on the black seed and was
breaking it open to get at the seed inside of the shell.
I stated earlier that I still have a lot to learn about our flying friends.
Now that's one serious look. This Jay has its game face on,
it looks like it's sending a message to others to keep their distance.
With blue being my favorite color, for me, this picture is eye candy.
There are so many things that we can learn from other living creatures
and mimicking some of their behavior would play well for us humans.
Have a read.
The blue jay is a bird with deep cultural and spiritual significance, associated with various meanings, including intelligence, communication, playfulness, fearlessness, awareness, and protection.
The blue jay’s symbolic meaning varies across different cultures. For example, Native Americans see the bird as a powerful communicator, while the Chinese associate it with good luck and happiness.
Blue jays can offer guidance and wisdom to people in their daily lives. By understanding the bird’s symbolism and incorporating it into their practices, individuals can learn to communicate effectively, embrace joy and playfulness, stand up for themselves and others, make better decisions, and cultivate greater awareness and empathy.

I also don't know much about birds but one thing I know is that I'm always attracted to them. Your shot is beautiful, it looks like they are modeling. It's a good thing that your birds are very tame compared to ours because maybe if those are here people will go panic catch them and make them pets since we don't usually have beautiful wild birds here.
The Jays are beautiful and they're one of the birds around here that we see in numbers and every day. It's always a treat to see them in the winter as most birds have flown off to warmer places.
Great photos of this lovely Jay family! Young Blue jays usually stay within the family unit for 2 to 3 months, before they fly off to establish independent territories.
We have learned not to feed bread to ducks as it has no nutritional value for them and it can cause malnutrition and painful deformities if consumed too much. Instead feed them cracked corn, oats, birdseed, frozen veggies, chopped lettuce.. Things that are healthy for them.
!DHEDGE
As I was writing this post I thought of the fact that I don't think I've ever seen a baby Blue Jay. Maybe I have though, but they must be rather large after a short period of time.
Thanks for that bit of knowledge. The last thing I'll feed them now will be bread. Bread doesn't seem to be good for too many living things, including humans.

Great you found a bird to fit the bill this week, having used all my crow and raven photography in previous contests, have now run out of photos.
Very specific little group of birds included many from North not the South. Oh dear will have to watch out for the next round!
Well done with the Blue Jays they sure are beautiful.
!BEER
There have been a few weeks where I've had nothing to fit the bill either.😥
As soon as I read that the Blue Jay was part of the corvid a big smile appeared, knowing that these birds visit every day all day.😁
They surely are beautiful. I wish that I could get a picture as they come in gliding and land on the feeder. Their underside is almost as striking as the rest of their body. The underside has no blue, but the pattern of black and white is striking.
The sound delightful birds to see visiting, have a great day and !LUV to the family.

Fantastic shots of the blue jays! I must admit that I also learned a lot from our community. So many things still to learn. Now I know a little more about the blue jays.
Thank you very much for your excellent post.
Thanks, The pics of the birds eating together I thought were very cool as usually only two at a time get along in the feeder.
It's good to keep the old brain stimulated and learning anything new makes for a good day.
Honestly, I have never seen a blue bird and I don't think that it exists here in my country
I love their colour and it is not even just the blue but the white too.
It looks so good
the combo of white and blue is striking for sure. Their underside is also beautiful, with a remarkable pattern of black and white.
Always great to watch your feeder big guy, as the birds are stunning. The Blue Jays are indeed eye candy.
Take care and greetings to our Lady.

With the different feeders around we don't have a lack of birds to observe. It's funny, no matter how many times I see a bird, I'm always fascinated by their beauty and aerial prowess.
Thanks for the gifts, my friend.
Yeah, I have seen a few of your bird feeder posts in the past and all good posts.
Same as me, as I must have over 100 photos of the Southern Double-collared sunbird and one stays transfixed by their abilities.
Only a pleasure!
Here's some more, !PIZZA !LOLZ and !LUV for the Lady.

While I thought I knew a thing or two about birds I didn't know that Blue Jays fall into the Corvid family. My feathers are almost ruffled. But then we don't have those delightful birds here in SA so I guess I'm excused. Your words paint a wonderfully entertaining picture to compliment the Blue Jays
there are so many birds that I have no idea about, especially ones that are from other countries. Heck, I don't know too much about the ones that live here in the States.
Thanks for that last line, that means a lot to me.
Merely stating a fact. People are quick to insult or criticize. When we should be quick to compliment and encourage
Isn't that the truth?
I love blue jays. They're so smart and pleasant to look at. The details on the tails of the ones you photographed are very cool.
Their bottoms do look nice and fluffy and so white.
You should see the underside of the tail feathers, striking as well with a black and white pattern that is eye-catching.
This one gave me new knowledge about this certain bird. Their commitment to each other after meeting each other is just so lovely that we humans should do as well. Because that TILL DO US PART vow is already fading.
Enjoyed this one.
We could learn a lot of good things from these birds, but as humans, we think we know it all and only practice a small % of what we preach.
Great photos! These jays are very beautiful. They hold food in their paws so funny.
Thanks, they sure are striking. When I first saw them bobbing up and down I had no idea that they were breaking open the shell to get at the seed.
Looks like the blue jay gang took over the feeder. Only other bird mean enough to take over that territory would be the cardinal gang.
It's funny you say that. I always thought that the Blue Jay was the king of the forest, but recently I've seen Cardinals come to the feeder and the Jays immediately fly off.
