SMaP141 ~ Free Theme (Red-bellied woodpecker)

(Edited)

The Red-bellied woodpecker I have featured once before for the SMaP contest.
The pictures that I included in my previous post about this beautiful bird were OK, but this time around I couldn't be happier with the way they turned out.

When I took this first picture I swear the bird knew that I would be featuring him in a post for the #featheredfriends community. When the Red-bellied woodpecker stops in, which they do on a daily basis, they are very active at the feeder, which makes it almost impossible to focus in on them. Besides constantly pecking at the suit bar and perpetually circling the feeder, they seem to always be looking over their shoulder for any incoming traffic. If you look closely you will see what I think is a seed garnered from the suet bar, held tightly in its bill. Or could it be its tongue? Do Red-bellied woodpeckers even have a tongue?

The contrast between the bright red head and the black-and-white

pattern of its body is beautiful.

With food being scarce this time of year it seems like I'm loading a new block of food into the cage of the feeder every other day.

IMG_5005.JPG

They wrap their tail feathers on the underside of the feeder for balance.

IMG_5003.JPG

Red-bellied woodpeckers are one of the few birds we see here in Upstate NY that stay around all winter.

IMG_5013.JPG

With the bird's back turned toward the lens of the camera we get a really good view of the Mohawk hair feather style this fellow likes to sport.

It's always a lot of fun participating in this contest and seeing what others have posted, all of which would be impossible without the dedication of @nelinoeva, @melinda010100, and @barbara-orenya.

Oh, his hairstyle is just awesome. 😉
I was surprised to see how long the woodpecker's tongue is.

A Red-bellied Woodpecker can stick out its tongue nearly 2 inches past the end of its beak. The tip is barbed and the bird’s spit is sticky, making it easier to snatch prey from deep crevices. Males have longer, wider-tipped tongues than females, possibly allowing a breeding pair to forage in slightly different places on their territory and maximize their use of available food.

So, it well may be the tip of the tongue on the first pic.

Thank you for that bite of information. The only bird's tongue that I've ever seen was that of a humming bird as it feeds on the nectar in the feeder. Nature is amazing.

I am sure that the bird's agent, Mr. Owl, took the bird for a haircut and then told the bird to come and pose for you. Mr. Owl is very clever, as he knows that the bird will drop some food on the ground, and at night, Mr. Owl can come and feast on the mice that gather to eat the food on the ground. !LOLZ
Jokes aside, you have some great shots here my friend.

Love your sense of humor. I thought that the agent was supposed to be working for his client but in this case it seems as though the agent has its own well being in mind.

!LOLZ it's actually a wordplay, as most everyone that we meet nowadays have hidden motives, exactly like Mr. Owl has.

Hidden motives, no way. What are you saying, they have an agenda of their own. 😁

Patience is a virtue and you had better have a lot of it if you are into taking pictures of a subject that just doesn't sit around. 😁

Of course we should take great care of these birds and if we build our house, we should build their small houses there, then they will give us a lot of prayers and our life will also go well when we are aware of all these things.

I agree totally. Building birdhouses where we can view them on a daily basis will give us a lot of pleasure for sure.

We have lots of woodpeckers here. I was hoping to hang feeders this year. It would be a new place for it but involves climbing so I don’t know if it will happen.

You got some really nice shots of the bird!

Handsome fella visiting, well he knows where the food is by now. Mohawk hairstyle very well groomed, that tail appears the woodpeckers style everywhere hooking it back neatly to balance.
