Some Major Environmental Issues in England – What’s Happening?
Here are some major environmental issues happening in England right now, and as a nature lover, I find them deeply concerning.
Toxic Waste Fires in East London: A site in Havering, East London, has been burning underground for years due to illegal waste dumping. People nearby are breathing in toxic fumes, but there’s still no proper clean-up plan. source
Sewage in Windermere: In 2024, raw sewage was dumped into Windermere for over 6,000 hours (about 17 hours a day). This causes toxic algae and harms wildlife, yet little is being done to stop it. source
Government Failing to Protect Waterways: The environmental watchdog found that agencies responsible for stopping pollution aren’t doing their job. Legal action may be taken to hold them accountable. source
These environmental issues are causing serious harm: toxic waste fires release harmful chemicals into the air and soil, polluting water and affecting health; raw sewage in Windermere is killing wildlife and making the lake unsafe; and government inaction allows pollution to continue unchecked, damaging ecosystems. If we don’t take action, these problems will worsen, hurting nature and our own health.
It’s easy to assume that someone else will fix these problems, but these ongoing issues show that change only happens when people speak up and demand action. If we don’t hold those in power accountable, who will?
Have a good one,

I was horrified last year in England to find it just wasn't safe to swim hardly anywhere anymore. There seemed to be sooo much less wildlife than when I lived there 15 years ago too
There are still plenty of safe varieties of swimming locations around, not connected to this polluted water. Some wild areas are ok, beaches like the Blackpool and Wlterinng beach are good too.
Bees and insect population has dropped, they are the pollinators and affected lots of things.
So far the wild life around where I am is still good, some lakes are still ok for crayfishing etc. it is concerning though.
I think I just found it hard not to be near a safe body of water to swim in. It's hard to get anywhere in the UK and I'd also heard of ear infections down in cornwall- it's like you have to check wind, swell, tides AND sewerage which was crazy to me.
And it is too cold here to swim! It is not the best place for water sports, etc. Most people go abroad to do this type of activity where they can enjoy. 😊💗
If I lived in the UK I would too! Plus stupid parking fees... Etc etc
Spot on! Now we also have a clean air zone, where they charge vehicles to pass through—apparently to reduce nitrogen dioxide—but who knows whose pocket the money goes into?
By what means can we hold those in power to account? Vote them out and vote in more of the same? Protest? All pointless in my opinion. We need a revolution of mass non-compliance that we'll never get. I can't see things getting any better before they get much worse.
