Little Smart Tory.

Did your parents play the role in guiding what you watch?

Oh yes!!!
By the time you hear “oya close your eyes” when seated for a Nollywood epic drama with mummy, just know they've started the kissing scene.
As a matter of fact, at a point we were no longer told first “close your eyes before we close our eyes” mere watching the movie and from the act knowing what's approaching next, we'll jejely close our eyes before mommy turns to look at our faces to know whether or not our eyes are closed.

But you know what happened next? Now let me tell you a breakdown story.

During the time mommy said "close your eyes to a kissing scene", as an obedient child that i am, i would respectfully close my eyes pretty tight and then started asking mommy “is it finished, can i open my eyes now?”
Alright, that's for stage one.

Stage 2..
Sitting watching a movie with mommy again, naturally i know when the kissing scene is approaching and also would jejely close my eyes before mommy talks. But this time, with both hands on my face, when I notice mommy has turned to look at my face and go back watching the movie while smiling, I know by then her attention is no longer on me but in the movie. Through my hands still on my face, i'll open my eyes..hehehe

But then, mommy later caught me and of course scolded me, and before you knew it i was back to stage one.

Stage 3.
Ah! In these stage is what i call “man’s nor hot” okay, don't ask me the meaning of the slant, I don't know too..lol

Now, let's call me a 12.. 13 years old Tory who's already used to closing her eyes while watching movies with mom. By the time the kissing scene is approaching again, i'll not jejely close eyes again but will gladly carry myself to the kitchen and peep through the door, all thanks to our house architecture.
There's however a back up plan to these, precisely i got no excuse to go over to the kitchen or maybe mom might notice someday, i'll just lay tummy flat on the couch and gladly enjoy the show through our house ties..hahaha, am smart right?
Yes yes, i know..don't mention..lol

Back to the present, as a young adult who's in her twenties, would you believe if I say to you that I still find it uncomfortable watching a kissing scene with mommy even to this moment.

Honestly, I am no saint. Now it's a matter of not just having to see it countless times but also doing it, yet finds it inconvenient watching with mom.
Doesn't this teach a lesson?

If you didn't learn, I did.
First it's my story, secondly for my age I think I was a little smarter and then again considering these Gen Z generations who are way smarter how much more for my unborn kids who are still somewhere in heaven.

As far as i'm concerned, gone are the days where children were naive and completely innocent of the happenings of this world. Kids of today knows far more than some adults do and believe me you, they'll never tell you what they've heard from friends and classmates even though for the fear of being. flogged or scolded.
The world is drastically changing as their days come by, and in my way, I'll lecture my kids according to the direction the world goes instead.

According to the level of there intelligence ill carefully look at for not minding the age, my kids would sit with me and we would all laugh and say “aww” to the kissing scenes together then by the end of the movies, we would also sit back and gist about the movie while in between lines lecture talks would come in.

A Parent-child relationship isn't an easy building, especially when it might look as if you're spoiling your kid yourself. But I believe it's very achievable while it comes with doing what others don't.. I learned from my experience and definitely still learning, creating a bond relationship with my kids is one priority I look upon by the time I am ready to have them and in all sincerity my parental guidance would come after the movie is concluded as it works for me and also for them.

By the time you hear “oya close your eyes”

I just knew you would watch the scene one way or another 😂

Censoring kids is not an easy thing to do, beacuse they are mostly wiser and smarter than we thought.

I think it is better not to even watch those PG rated movies in their presence, if possible they should have their own tv inside their room with channels that are appropriate for them.

I agree with you, especially with parents who are shy is lecturing their kids.. They should just be given a separate tv instead but then it's might be at the cost of serious danger ahead if care isn't taken

Nigerian parents closing your eyes during movies is funny but that was the only way they could control what we watch on the screen without sending us inside to our rooms to read or sleep.. It was very funny and from your post, you even started knowing the kissing scene and what's to happen.

Lol... Oh yeah and that's the thing.
Parents try to avoid sending them inside, forgetting that even with the eyes close their ears still working.. It builds up curiosity you know.

Closing eye no be the issue, you still see the scene one way or the other lol. Today it is everywhere and almost unavoidable, but we don't enjoy watching them as you said, me too I'm not really comfortable watching stuffs like that so I do skip it when I'm watching a movie on my own.
I think the closing eye thing really worked on me too, at least it made me realize that watching those scenes could affect me!

Bad child lol

Maybe because I am a male child? But I was never scolded for watching a kissing scene and it looks funny to me whenever my nephew and niece do this same thing you said you do when a missing scene appear, they take away their eyes infact my nephew of 18 years still do that, it looks like it became an habit for him lol

You said it yourself, a male child you're..lol
I think that's a justifiable reason since my elder brother doesn't mind even though we went through same Upbringing.

It is well, it's all i can say.

I trust you would still find a way to watch 😂😂
Honestly kids were Innocent back then and had nothing in their mind. But the children of this generation are something else. How can a 9yr old be watching kissing scenes with their parents.

Back then you would receive hot slap for opening your eyes oo 😂😂

You made me remember the pain I felt when my parents were next to me in those scenes because they turned to look a little or if I was uncomfortable to joke. The typical close your eyes I think is a way of telling us that it was wrong, however I always cheated to see a little bit.

You remind me of my days of finding a way to achieve my aims against the wish of my parents. If ten ways are blocked, I look for the eleventh one. That stage is almost the same with every kid.
