From Seeds to Blooms: The Joy and Hidden Art of Gardening [LOH 180]
After our father renovated our house, I never envisioned that my mom would totally make our terrace into world full of plants. At first, we were arguing about this because we don't like our house to be a rainforest, since the only green places I knew were the city parks. However, a pandemic happened, and a health scare forced us to do something nice in order to stay healthy and breathe in this crazy world.
Here's my mom's little garden. As you can see, beside that is our neighbor's roof. While others are raising their houses during the summer, my mom decided to make her little jungle here on our rooftop. My father is still planning to finish the third floor renovation, but since we don't have the money right now to build another floor of the house, we just let my mom make her garden.
As I still remember, some of the pots here are also some of my projects from past semesters in college. Since that was the pandemic era, one of my professors gave us the task of taking care of a plant and keeping it alive for 90 days. My mom and I were neither botanists nor proficient when it came to handling and taking care of plants, but fortunately, some of them remained alive and were continuously growing.
We are not familiar with the types of soil and the types of plants that can survive for a long time in a tropical country like the Philippines, but because of my mother's eagerness to plant different kinds of flowers and plants, she really studied how they would survive in our place.
During summer, it is inevitable that some of the flowers in our house will die because of the extreme heat. But we are still lucky because, even though some are drying, they still grow and bloom on their own.
We also do not expect Zingeber Zerumbet to grow here in our mini garden. Thanks to those birds that bring seeds to the soil stored here on our rooftop. At first, we didn't know what kind of plant it was, but as it grew, I realized that it was one of the herbal plants that grows here in Asia. Some also use it as shampoo. I haven't tried it yet because when I touched it once, there was no slimy liquid that was said to be very aromatic.
Aside form that, we also have a lot of calamansi and oregano plants. These are some of the plants I use as first aid for my son's cough. Mama planted these plants naturally so we guarantee they are effective as a first aid for all types of cough.
As time went by, I realized how important the role of plants is in the entire environment. Even here at home, we can feel the good effect of planting, and I am wishing that our other neighbors will imitate us so that the beauty of the City can return again. As I said earlier, I rarely see green places here in the Metro, most commonly in parks, but it is sad to say that some of them were not real and just made of plastic. I really believe that the whole world would be greatly improved if every person was willing to plant at least one plant in their entire life. To be honest, I really admired my mom who made an effort to give us a nice spot here in our house where we can exercise, have coffee, or even meditate for a few hours. If they inherit me land, I would love to follow my mom in taking care of plants. I also want to add some kinds of colorful flowers here because I want to make our house smell sweet-scented as well. 🏵️🏵️
