Traditions are part of our national identity 👞

-Don't cry anymore my love, don't listen to those children... tomorrow I'll talk to the teacher.

Silvia's grandmother told her when she saw her coming back from school in tears. That day they all had to present the traditions that were part of the national identity.

Since Silvia was a foreigner, the teacher had told her to do the exercise based on her country of origin, Holland. She asked her to share some important tradition that was carried out.

So, the day before she was very excited preparing everything for the class. She made several summaries and a presentation to talk about the Sinterklaas Christmas tradition. From the large collection of shoes she owned, she decided to bring to school the one most meaningful to her: one made by her father many, many years ago.

However, when the time came for her to present to the class, as soon as she brought the shoe out, everyone began to laugh derisively and make derogatory and tasteless comments: “but what is that?”, “it's the most horrible thing I've ever seen”, “what a strange and big shoe”....

That was enough for poor Silvia to walk out of the classroom, frightened and embarrassed, straight home.

She could not believe how cruel her classmates were and neither could her grandmother who listened to her patiently while wiping away her tears....

Silvia didn't want her grandmother to talk to the teacher because she felt it wouldn't do any good, but she told her that it was very necessary to bring up the subject, because it was important to respect the customs and traditions of other countries.

-Your classmates need to apologize to you, honey. And your teacher should have been more firm on the subject, not setting a limit in time for such behavior is what causes unnecessary prejudices towards others in adulthood.

After Silvia's grandmother had a serious talk with the teacher and explained why she should not have been so soft with the children about what had happened, everything improved. Her classmates apologized to her granddaughter and did not bother her again.

However, Silvia's discontent continued. She was not entirely satisfied because she missed her country so much and was not connected to anything there. She was the oddball of her class, the whole school and the city....

-Grandma, if I have to stay here, should I forget about my old life? Maybe I'll fit in better....

-But, honey! What are you saying? Of course not... adapting to a new country doesn't mean leaving your roots behind. Come, come closer my love, I'll explain. -He said as he pointed to the sofa in the living room.

They both sat down and her grandmother began to speak:

Dear girl, first of all, this shoe is not just an object, but a symbol of love and family continuity. It belonged to your father and he made it himself by hand.... And do you know from whom he learned it? From your grandfather who also learned it from his father (your great-grandfather).

We have a beautiful legacy, a deep connection with all our generations...

Traditions give us a sense of belonging, they remind us of our roots and where we come from, honey. It says a lot about who we are because they keep the essence of our culture intact.

Our customs are not only a way to celebrate, but also to honor our ancestors and strengthen our family ties: they are like threads that weave the tapestry of life.

Although the world changes, traditions do not, they last forever. 🙌

After listening carefully to her grandmother's wisdom, Silvia was able to sleep that night much more peacefully. In fact, she had a beautiful dream in which she was walking through a small Dutch village.

She saw several shoes of different designs, filled with carrots and the typical cookies of her country. The aroma was delicious, she had not smelled it since she had emigrated.

She turned to the other side of her bed and continued dreaming, curled up in happiness and comforted by her grandmother's words. Now, she knew that through traditions, her family would remain united no matter the distances or challenges.

Never forget where you come from and don't let others undervalue your traditions 💪.

Saludos, @germanandradeg 🤗🤗.

I kept nodding my head "YES" while reading @vezo. Wise grandmother who stands firm in her beliefs and traditions. She knows what's important. I feel the gist of the story was set when grandmother visited the teacher and explained how she should have handled diversity. The way that the educational system is today doesn't leave a lot of room to reach this important aspect of our society in terms of respect for another's cultural identity.

Had grandmother not intervened, the students would never have apologized and kept taunting Silvia, unless some of them relayed the story at their own homes and were corrected and advised to apologize. Sadly, this is not the case. Hope there are more mothers and grandmothers to hold the mantle high.

That a beautiful story of family heritage and appreciation for one's own culture. If it's not taught at home, it will be lost. Thanks for sharing. Take care.

I'm glad you liked the story 💙, I made it thinking of all those times that human beings have treated others badly because of their ethnicity or country of origin. The differences should not disunite us as a society, on the contrary, that is what makes us unique, the cultural richness that we all possess 🙌. As you say, there is a lack of awareness at home, not all parents correct these behaviors in their children, not all take the trouble to go to school to create awareness in teachers. Greetings, thanks for stopping by and leaving a thought-provoking comment that adds so much to the reading @justclickindiva 🤗🤗.
