QC weekly contest #91: How I handle rude people

Dealing with rude people can be tough, but it's something we all face at some point and we have different ways to handle it . Here’s how I handle mine:

When someone is rude to me, the first thing I try to do is stay calm. It’s easy to get upset and react angrily, but that usually makes things worse. I take a deep breath and remind myself to keep my cool.

Often, people are rude because they are having a bad day or dealing with their own problems. I try to remember that their rudeness is more about them than me. This helps me not take their words or actions to heart,so I try not to take things personal.

If someone is rude to me, I might say something polite in return. For example, if someone snaps at me, I might say, "I’m sorry you feel that way." This can sometimes make the other person realize they were out of line. Responding rudeness with kindness can sometimes defuse the situation.

If the person continues being rude, that's when I set boundaries. I calmly tell the person that their behavior is not acceptable. For instance, I might say, "I don’t appreciate being spoken to like that." Setting boundaries helps protect my own feelings and can stop the rude behavior.

I sometimes walk away when I see the person has refused to calm down, leaving the situation can prevent it from escalating.

After dealing with a rude person on getting home, I talk about the person and incident with my husband. Talking about things really helps a lot, so I talk about it.
