CineTV Contest: I am Legend (2007)

The theme of zombies has become a very recurrent trend within the different popular masses, even more so with the series of The Walking Dead, which ended up extending this phenomenon. Phenomenon that hides a sad and dark origin, as its terminology indicates is to resurrect or bring someone back to life; however, its origin is given in Haiti, where some sorcerers had the ability to revive a slave, so that this continued with their hard work, subject to the will of the person who has made him live. Actually one of my favorite zombie movies is Train to Busan, however, as I already did a post about this film, for the contest of CineTV I participate with another one that I also like and this one is I am Legend.
I am Legend
Film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith, for the date of 2007, being the third adaptation of the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. The genre or genres in which the film is framed are Science Fiction, Apocalyptic Science Fiction, Action, Suspense, Drama, Horror, Zombies.
Approaching the plot, we are introduced to a doctor who genetically modifies a virus, where with this is achieved the cure for cancer, however, this brings terrible consequences, unleashing a pandemic of zombies in the world. Three years after the event, we are introduced to a desolate New York City, where only one man and his dog are present; this man is Robert Neville, a virologist immune to the virus, who works to find a cure for the disease.
This desolate life without the presence of any other human being, where he can engage in any conversation, makes him lose his sanity on several occasions; even so, he does not give up looking for a solution to such a nefarious virus. However, he will not only have this responsibility, he will also have to deal with the presence of these undead beings and manage to survive before them that, by the way, keep certain similarities to the characterization of a vampire. Will our hero get the cure? Will he really be the only survivor in the world? Or will there be more people who have not been infected? A film that will take us into the world of loneliness and isolation, reflecting on the fear of the unknown.
Will Smith has given us great performances in different films, and this one is no exception, because the simple fact of having most of the footage with only him on screen, clearly makes it a challenge; personifying the fact of living alone and the psychological consequences it brings, as in the scenes where he talks to the mannequins, he shows us very well executed, the mental instability that this comes or can generate.
In reference to the zombies, I feel they lacked a better execution, they look very computerized, video game style; with a good make-up, like the zombies in Train to Busan, would have given a greater plus to the film. The interesting thing is that the author of the book poses them as vampires, an evolved version of the human being, but, in the movie they make you assume that they are zombies, what makes them different is that they are not really brain dead and have some consciousness about their actions. However, it could be said that these beings both in the novel and in the movie ended up being more related to the definition of zombies, with respect to the virus that infects and genetically modifies the carrier, making them more aggressive.
The post-apocalyptic setting is acceptable, however, the special effects leave much to be desired, what saves it are the arguments that keeps the plot such as reason, beliefs, morality, among others that end up encompassing the many philosophical questions that we do as humans such as why we are here, what is really good and what is not, also that, despite so much darkness, there is still a glimmer of hope that drives you to survive and get out of it.

El tema referente a los zombies se ha convertido en una forma de tendencia muy recurrente dentro de las distintas masas populares, más aún con la serie de The Walking Dead, que termino por extender este fenómeno. Fenómeno que esconde un triste y oscuro origen, como su terminología indica es resucitar o volver a alguien a la vida; no obstante, su procedencia se da en Haití, donde unos hechiceros tenían la capacidad de revivir a un esclavo, para que este continuara con sus arduas laborales, sometido a la voluntad de la persona que lo ha hecho vivir. Realmente una de mis películas favoritas de zombies es la de Tren hacia Busan, sin embargo, como ya hice un post referente a este filme, para el concurso de CineTV participo con otra que también me gusta y esta es Soy Legenda.

Película dirigida por Francis Lawrence y protagoniza por Will Smith, para la fecha del 2007, siendo la tercera adaptación de la novela homónima de 1954 de Richard Matheson. El género o géneros en que se enmarca dicho film son Ciencia ficción, Ciencia ficción apocalíptica, Acción, Suspenso, Drama, Terror, Zombies
Acercándonos a la trama, nos introducen a una doctora que modifica genéticamente un virus, donde con este se consigue la cura del cáncer, sin embargo, este trae consecuencias terribles, desatando una pandemia de zombies en el mundo. Después de 3 años de dicho suceso, nos trae a escenario una ciudad de Nueva York desolada, en el cual solo hace presencia un hombre con su perrita; este hombre es Robert Neville, un virólogo inmune a tal virus, quien trabaja para conseguir una cura contra esta enfermedad.
Esta vida desolada y sin presencia de algún otro ser humano, donde pueda entablar cualquier conversación, hace que pierda la cordura en varias ocasiones; aun así, no se rinde en buscar una solución a tan nefasto virus. No obstante, no solo tendrá esta responsabilidad, también lidiará con la presencia de estos seres no muertos y lograr sobrevivir ante ellos que, por cierto, guardan ciertas similitudes a la caracterización de un vampiro. ¿Conseguirá nuestro héroe la cura? ¿Será realmente el único sobreviviente en el mundo? o ¿Habrá más personas que no se han infectado? Una película que nos llevara a adentrarnos a ese mundo de la soledad y el aislamiento, reflexionando en el temor a lo desconocido.
Will Smith nos ha entregado grandes actuaciones en diferentes películas, y en esta no es la excepción, pues el simple he hecho de tener la mayor parte del metraje solamente con él en pantalla, claramente lo vuelve un reto; personificar ese hecho de vivir en soledad y las consecuencias psicológicas que trae consigo, como en las escenas donde habla con los maniquíes, nos la manifiesta muy bien ejecutadas, la inestabilidad mental que esto llega o puede llegar a generar.
En referencia a los zombies, siento que le falto mejor ejecución en los mismos, se ven como muy computarizados, estilo videojuego; con un buen maquillaje, estilo a los zombies de Tren hacia Busan, lo hubiese dado un mayor plus al filme. Lo interesante es que el autor del libro los plantea como vampiros, una versión evoluciona del ser humano, pero, dentro de la película te lo hacen asumir que son zombies, lo que hace diferir de estos, es que realmente no tienen muerte cerebral y poseen algo de consciencia sobre sus acciones. Sin embargo, se podría decir que estos seres tanto dentro de la novela como en la película terminaron por relacionarse más a la definición de zombies, con respecto a lo del virus que infecta y modifican genéticamente al portador, volviendo más agresivos.
La ambientación post apocalíptica es aceptable, sin embargo, los efectos especiales dejan mucho que desear, lo que la salva son los argumentos que guarda la trama como son la razón, las creencias, la moralidad, entre otros más que, terminan por englobar las muchas cuestiones filosóficas que nos hacemos como humanos como es lo es el por qué estamos aquí, que es realmente bueno y que no, asimismo de que, a pesar de tanta oscuridad, aún hay una luz de esperanza que te impulsa a sobrevivir y salir de la misma.

Esta película me encanta. Will Smith se destaca siempre en sus películas. Me gustó la trama y la escenografía. Considero que los seres contaminados por el virus se convierten en mutantes. Saludos
