CineTV Contest: Robots (2005) & Bicentennial Man (1999)

Robots are those automated entities that have become possible thanks to technological advances, triggering a series of both positive and negative opinions about them, since for some it is a benefit and necessity for the development of society, and for others, a possible threat to humanity. When there are new advances in the history of the world, we must be clear that everything will bring its consequences and that, depending on the vision that is given to these new tools that are emerging, will define a possible future. On this occasion, I want to share with you 2 of my favorite robot movies for the contest of Cine TV and these are Robots and Bicentennial Man.
Robots
Animation, comedy, science fiction and children's film; released in 2005, under the direction of Chris Wedge and art direction of Steve Martino, being the second film of Blue Sky Studios.
The plot of the film focuses on the character of Rodney Tinplate, a young robot who dreams of being a great inventor, thanks to his admiration for The Great Welder, who owns a company that develops useful machines for society. Rodney invents a robot that would serve as a support to his father, however, due to certain technical failures, the opposite happens, he leaves a great debt to his father, so, to compensate this fact, he goes to Robot City, where the industry of The Great Welder is located, in order to work in it. However, on his arrival, things are not as he thought, which will make him face a new authoritarian system and insist on achieving what he has longed for and, in the same journey, he will be a positive influence on others around him.
This film has a hopeful and well-structured message, based on the narrative scheme called "the hero's journey". On more than one occasion, one comes to feel identified with the problems faced by the protagonist, narrated with fluidity and that does not lose its charm over the years. They are humanized robots, in the sense that what they feel or what happens to them are human issues that are faced day by day, in order to grow and defend the individuality that characterizes us as humans, in this case, as robots.
Its striking colors was what attracted me the most as a child; the design of the characters in question is so well crafted that you do not forget them and you get to identify very well with the personality that has been endowed to each one. I loved two phrases that are presented in the narration of the said film and they are the following: "No matter what you are made of, you can shine" and "the dreams you leave forgotten, torture you all your life"; phrases that share the values and individualism of humanity, in a very symbolic way, where they expose that we should not minimize our dreams or undertakings, because little by little you can build what you long for and that no one should turn off your light, constancy attracts the good and firmness before the battles, gives its fruits; these, are secret ingredients for success.
Bicentennial Man
Under the direction of Chris Columbus and starring the late and beloved actor Robin Williams, Bicentennial Man was brought to the screen in 1999, inspired by the eponymous story by Issac Asimov and the novel by Asimov and Robert Silverberg. A classic science fiction and comedy-drama film; although I was young at the time of its release, it caught my attention the first time I saw it and as an adult, I understood many of the themes that are addressed in this film.
Robin Williams plays the robot of the NDR series "Andrew", who is acquired by the Martin family, to do what one expects from these automatons: household chores. However, this robot begins to develop sensitivity, not at all common among machines. Observing how human life is and how ephemeral it is, awakens his curiosity, as well as his desire and longing to experience human feelings and actions.
A film that makes you reflect, question and evaluate many issues, among them: What makes a human a human? Addressed in the film within these issues: What would happen if a robot came to think and feel like a human? What would it be capable of? And where would we humans be in this evolution?
I have always thought that, at the time of the introduction of robots in society, this could come to limit our social capabilities, to relate and create connections with others of our own species. Even their existence could come to be considered a loss of our individuality as humans, explored very well within the plot of the film, revealing the causes and consequences of this future.
Technology should not be a tool of self-destruction, rather it should be a complement to daily life, just as when social networks were created that, even though they can distance us, they can also connect us, being able to continue sharing with others, even when we are in different parts of the world, became something useful and meaningful.
In short, can a robot supplant or obtain the formula that characterizes us as humans? From personal experiences, even an animal becomes more human than oneself, just because we have the ability to reason and speak, does not make us human, there is much more beyond, empathy, the search for the individual, the relationship, could be some of the ingredients to this philosophy. Los robots son aquellas entidades autómatas que se han convertido en algo posible gracias a los avances tecnológicos, desencadenando una serie de opiniones tanto positivas como negativas sobre los mismos, ya que para algunos es un beneficio y necesidad para el desenvolvimiento de la sociedad, y para otros, una posible amenaza hacia la humanidad. Cuando existe nuevos avances dentro de la historia del mundo, hay que estar claro que todo traerá sus consecuencias y que, dependiendo de la visión que se les otorgue a estas nuevas herramientas que van surgiendo, definirá un posible futuro. En esta ocasión, quiero compartirles 2 de mis películas favoritas de robots para el concurso de Cine TV y estas son Robots y el Hombre Bicentenario.
Robots
Película de genero animación, comedia, ciencia ficción e infantil; estrenada para el año 2005, bajo la dirección de Chris Wedge y de la dirección artística de Steve Martino, siendo la segunda película de Blue Sky Studios.
La trama de la película nos centra en el personaje de Rodney Hojalata, un joven robot que sueña con ser un gran inventor, gracias a su admiración a El Gran Soldador, quien posee una compañía donde se desarrolla maquinas útiles para la sociedad. Rodney inventa un robot que serviría de apoyo a su padre, sin embargo, por ciertas fallas técnicas, sucede lo contrario, le deja una gran deuda al mismo, así que, para compensar este hecho se dirige a Ciudad robot, donde está la industria de El Gran Soldador, para lograr trabajar en la misma. No obstante, en su llegada, las cosas no son como lo pensaba, lo que hará que se enfrente a un nuevo sistema autoritario e insistir en lograr lo que tanto ha anhelado y, en ese mismo trayecto, será una influencia positiva para los demás a su alrededor.
Este film guarda un mensaje esperanzador y bien estructurado, planteado desde el esquema narrativo denominado “el viaje del héroe”. En más de una ocasión, uno llega a sentirse identificado con las problemáticas en que se enfrenta el protagonista, narrados con fluidez y que no pierde su encanto a lo largo de los años. Son robots humanizados, en el sentido de que, lo que sienten o lo que le sucede, son cuestiones humanas que se afrontan día a día, para así lograr crecer y defender la individualidad que nos caracteriza como humanos, en este caso, como robots.
Sus colores llamativos fue lo que más me atrajo de niña; el diseño de los personajes en cuestión está tan bien elaborados que no se te olvida y que se llegan a identificar muy bien con la personalidad que se le ha dotado a cada uno. Me encantó dos frases que se presentan en la narración de dicha película y son las siguientes: “No importa de que este hecho, puedes brillar” y “los sueños que dejas olvidados, te torturan toda la vida”; frases que comparten los valores e individualismos de la humanidad, de una manera muy simbólica, donde exponen que no hay que minimizar nuestros sueños o emprendimientos, pues poco a poco se puede construir lo que tanto se anhela y que nadie debe apagar tu luz, la constancia atrae lo bueno y la firmeza ante las batallas, da sus frutos; estos, son ingredientes secretos para el éxito.
El Hombre Bicentenario
Bajo la dirección de Chris Columbus y con el protagonismo del difunto y querido actor Robin Williams, nos trajeron en pantalla en 1999 al Hombre Bicentenario, inspirado en el relato homónimo de Issac Asimov y en la novela de Asimov y Robert Silverberg. Una película clásica de ciencia ficción y comedia dramática; aunque estaba pequeña en el momento de su estreno, llamo mi atención la primera vez que la vi y ya adulta, comprendí muchos temas que en este film son abordados.
Robin Williams encarna al robot de la serie NDR “Andrew”, quien es adquirido por la familia Martin, para que haga lo que uno tanto se espera de estos autómatas: las tareas del hogar. Sin embargo, este robot comienza a desarrollar sensibilidad, nada común dentro de las maquinas. Al observar cómo es la vida humana y lo efímera que es, va despertando su curiosidad, además de anhelo y deseo por experimentar sentimientos y acciones humanas.
Una película que te hace reflexionar, cuestionar y valorar muchos temas, entre ellos ¿Qué es lo que hace que un humano sea un humano? Abordado en la película dentro de estas problemáticas: ¿Qué pasaría si un robot llegara a pensar y sentir como un humano? ¿De qué sería capaz? Y ¿Dónde quedaríamos nosotros los humanos en esta evolución?
Siempre he pensado que, al momento de la introducción de los robots en la sociedad, este podría llegar a limitar nuestras capacidades sociales, de relacionarnos y crear conexiones con otros de nuestra misma especie. Incluso, su existencia podría llegar a considerarse una pérdida de nuestra individualidad como humanos, explorado muy bien dentro de la trama de la película, revelando las causas y consecuencias de este futuro.
La tecnología no debería ser una herramienta de autodestrucción, más bien debe ser un complemento a la vida diaria, así como cuando se crearon las redes sociales que, aun cuando puede distanciarnos, también puede conectarnos, el poder seguir compartiendo con los demás, aun estando en diferentes partes del mundo, se volvió algo útil y significativo.
En fin, ¿Un robot puede suplantar u obtener la fórmula que nos caracteriza como humanos? Desde las vivencias personales, hasta un animal llega a ser más humano que uno mismo, solo porque tenemos la capacidad de razonar y hablar, no nos hace humano, hay mucho más allá, la empatía, la búsqueda de lo individual, el relacionarnos, podrían ser unos de los ingredientes a esta filosofía. ¿Qué piensan ustedes? ¿Qué es lo que caracteriza a que un humano sea humano?
