FreeCompliments Community – Seeking Recommendations to Improve Our Contest (Post of the Month / Compliment of the Month / Non-Compliment Comment of the Month)
Every month since July 2023, we’ve been running a Post of the Month, Compliment of the Month, and Non-Compliment Comment of the Month Contest. We usually have pretty decent participation, but I think we can do much better.
Several weeks back, I had introduced the concept of rewarding HSBI for those who vote according to the contest rules. However, this isn’t going to help much due to some technical issues which were shown to me which may prevent people from even being able to access the content.
Thus, I’d like to find ways to improve the formatting of the contest, so I’ll throw some ideas out there.
Our Current Format
Currently, we publish, on a monthly basis, 8 nominations per category (Post, Compliments, Non-Compliments) with links which are visible in the original post, as well as in the comments under headings. Depending on the frontend, these options can be accessed with varying degrees of difficulty or ease. Additionally, in order to stay on the original page, simply right-clicking to open a link is the best option. Here is an example of where this last worked well. (Try to access this page via multiple frontends in order to compare)
This can be obstructed easily by spam comments, resulting in a poor viewing experience. Our most recent contest is an example of this.
Alternative Suggestions of Formatting
First idea: in the comments, labeling our nominations in shorthand, i.e. “P1” is the first post, “P2” is the 2nd post, “C1” is the first compliment, “NC3” is the 3rd non-compliment comment, etc., so that you can just vote directly on those without headers. Essentially, the comment section would just have 24 comments consisting of “P1” through “P8” plus “C1” through “C8” plus “NC1” through “NC8.”
Second idea: people simply write in their choices (from the options listed in the post, or another post of their choice that’s not listed) instead of voting on comments. This might be more work for the person voting, but also cleaner in terms of formatting. I believe this option would result in lower engagement.
Third idea: limiting our final nominations to only one per week, thus decreasing our total nominees in the contest to 4 per category per week (instead of the current 8). This decreases the amount of reading of content required by our voters. However, this means that we may have to add a weekly contest to choose between our two weekly nominees for each category, which in turn still requires more participation / voting.
Of course, a combination of any of the above is also feasible, and I’m certainly open to other options which I did not mention as well
Conclusion
We’re looking for ways to help improve our monthly contest for Post of the Month, Compliment of the Month, and Non-Compliment of the Month. Please let me know your thoughts so that we can increase engagement in terms of voting for our nominations!
What do you think of the listed suggestions? Are there any other thoughts that you have on how to help us improve the formatting of our contest? How can we improve engagement so that more people vote on our nominees?
I would love to hear any and all opinions about these topics from everyone who is currently a member of FreeCompliments, since you’re all inaugural members! Anyone else who finds this page is also very welcome to voice their opinion. We’re all about free speech, and everyone’s experience has value.

(If you were tagged, it’s because you’re an inaugural member – please let me know if you don’t want to be tagged and I’ll stop, pronto!)
🙏❤️
I think 4 per category is best and then run the polls in Threads would be the cleanest and easiest way for it to be done. Also, this would promote the Community Threads sections as well. Many people have their votes tied up and with limited VP, it's not the best option to expect people to use them in this way. You could do weekly run offs as well, but that's not really necessary if you trust your curators to be good judges of what's quality and genuine.
Polls are a very clean approach; however, the downside to this is that running each week's nominations only through polls limits exposure to the wider community and some of the inaugural members.
I may be able to solve this by simultaneously crafting a post and a poll. This runs the risk of excessive tagging of community members (an additional 4 times per month). I can also leave tags out so that those who follow or come across my posts would vote.
There's also the issue of relying on my nominators for exceptionally timely nominations; currently, I give them some leeway in timing to submit their choices, and this would reduce it. I may be able to compensate this with slight bumps in pay (just thinking out loud here).
I originally set it up so that people could also comment under their choice if they're low on VP; alternatively, they could use a dust vote (1%). Already thought through, and shouldn't be an issue!
Anyway, thanks for the input! I'll see what others say as well.
So, you tag every single member for every post? Usually that's unnecessary for curation accounts, because they tend to get more followers than users. I myself wouldn't want to get tagged at all, because if I wanted to participate, I'd keep an eye out for the Article, because they tend to be on a schedule, correct? Also, PeakD has polls as well. I'm not sure about ecency, but you could make a different comment for polls on different UI's.
Just the inaugural members get tagged (you can see the list on some of my posts, with an opt-out option - most people did not opt out).
Interesting, didn't see how the polls function on other frontends. May be worth a look!

The old formatting is great although yes, the spam comments are a distraction. I wonder if there is a way to automatically hide or mute those so they don't obstruct.
I second faqsonleo's comment about reducing to 4 for each category. The polls on threads are a good idea but as you mentioned, there is a downside too as not all members use the frontend.
Certain frontends are better at hiding spam comments than others. I think it's also dependent on your settings.
OK, so there's a bit more consensus about reducing the total number, which is great. Polls + a post might be the best option going forward. Good feedback, thanks!
Congratulations @freecompliments! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)

I very much appreciate this community, and I love contests, but being one of the most active accounts on the Blockchain, I simply don't have sufficient time to read too many nominations. I would like to participate, so I'd suggest more frequent nomination posts with fewer nominations for each one. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
