EMERGENCY DOCTOR

I'm someone who is usually careful when handling things that can potentially cause harm even though I'm adventurous. Like I could hold a gun and shoot up if I can ascertain that the bullet won't fall on anyone. But there was one time when I gave into pressure, and had to bear the consequences which by the way was severe. To date I still remember it like it was yesterday, but I'm happy I experienced it as it turned me into an emergency doctor. Before I continue I will love to advise you reading this to not try to copy what you're reading at home, school or anywhere… again don't try this at home. So without further ado, let me jump right into it.

So in 2020 after the lockdown I was working as an ICT personnel for the first time and the experience for me is something that would stick with me for the rest of my life. As the ICT personnel I was incharge of all computers and gadgets the company had, and just like how a lot of growing firms would make you do things not in your job description, I became incharge of procurement somehow. But what can you expect from a young man finally getting the chance to do something he loves, I took the job with both hands as long as it enabled me to do what I love. It wasn't easy though as I started keeping stocks of items in use and not in use, I was also incharge of setting up all office equipment both ICT and non ICT related.

On a fateful day my boss instructed me to check out a faulty roll up stand in the store room and see if It was still useful. In a bid to make the roll up stand useful again I opened it up and was checking the wheels of the stand until I mistakenly activated the wheels with my hand still inside the roll up stand. At first I didn't feel anything after I removed my hand, but suddenly I started feeling dizzy. Only one carried my hand. I noticed it was kinda heavy. I looked at it and behold there was blood everywhere gushing out profusely. My colleague who entered the store saw me and started panicking but I told her to calm down and get me water.

As she rushed to get the water I was feeling more and more dizzy and I knew I needed to find a way to stop the bleeding before I passed out. I had a handkerchief with me which I tied on my hand close to my wrist with the help of my mouth and right hand. Thankfully I'm right handed and it was my left hand that was affected. When my colleague brought the water and the rest of my colleagues who came and started panicking because of the amount of blood they saw, I had to calm all of them down, dipped my hand in the bowl of water and asked for spirit or alcohol and cotton wool. There was no first aid kit in the company and a pharmacy or hospital was far away. So my colleagues rushed to get alcohol with high spirit content which I poured on my hand to reduce the bleeding. And that was how I was able to hold on until I got to a proper hospital.

This will definitely sting! Even, the thought of it makes me cringe.😳

Now, I hope the company learns a valuable lesson from this scenario and now have a First Aid kit ready at work. Safety in the workplace is very vital. I'm glad for you that the incident wasn't devastating.

That must have been a scary experience. Your composure and endurance helped you greatly. I hope the company has done the needful now.

Your life is very adventurous! I am glad you are ok! You kept your blood cool, and your head straight in very difficult situation. It is truly admirable!

Although I would never expect that roll up stand can be that dangerous! ;)

But! As you mention in your article - it led to new occupation. So it was worth it I guess:))

These are the issues, there should be a first aid kit in all companies. You remained calm in a situation in which you were the victim, kudos

Thank goodness you knew about the alcohol pouring on wounds to reduce bleeding. And you did great on your part, by tying your hand to stop the bleeding
