19 February, 2025 @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2652 | Prompt: a date (a fecha)

The sun bathed in its warmth skyscrapers above and residents below enjoying a Friday afternoon outing. Without notice, the sun ceased its task and sought safety behind friendly clouds. But the clouds rejected it, instead scrambling for their own safety from fiery streaks leaping across the afternoon sky.
No sooner than the streaking flames appeared and illuminated the skyline from the east, they bolted west catching up and devouring the fleeing clouds.
Tail lights displaying solid red slowly lit up the street. Reading the back cover of a book, Jeremy didn't immediately notice the commotion. His friends, Lynn and Wesley elbowed him.
Walking home from the library, the three freshmen best friends in high school stood gaping at the anomaly. The sight was even better than attending the matinee, which they earlier opted out.
From the sidewalk, they stepped into the street and joined others who'd paused to witness the event. Silent glances from one to the other confirmed they'd neither seen nor heard away from school or recalled covering in class topics the fiery objects presented.
From out of nowhere, behind the streaking flames, a small airplane materialized.
"Did you see that?" Lynn shouted, her hand shaking while tugging Jeremy's arm. She watched as the plane dipped, then pointed upward in the direction of the white banner.
"Wait a minute," Jeremy replied calmly. He reached into his backpack and retrieved a small pair of binoculars.
A date etched in red colors floated between the folds on the banner attached to the tail of the plane as the letters "VI-XXXI-MCMLXXII" came into focus.
Carefully, Jeremy read each letter out loud, then lowered his binoculars. A frown covered his face as the knowledge slowly rose in his consciousness.
"It's a date, and not one I think our society has knowledge of," he responded slowly with a bewildered look on his face.
"What does it mean?" Lynn repeated several times, her voice cracking, then pressed her hand over her mouth.
Wesley echoed the question, while both stared at Jeremy for answers before he chimed in. "Perhaps it's a mistake or, a joke."
It was no joke that they watched their ice cream accelerate its drip down their fingers as the heat from the atmosphere descended on their cones. Sweat poured from their foreheads. Whether they understood the meaning of the date was irrelevant. The temperate was rising; and quickly.
Standing next to a trash bin, they tossed in the cones and ran as fast as they could to a nearest storefront. There, they discovered it already closed, so hugged the brick outside, closed their eyes, and prayed.
What they didn't know was that millions across the country peered into the sky as the plane disappeared into the thick, smoky clouds.

! [The Last Sunset]
"¿Has visto eso?
