For years, I advocated for the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of one's happiness or unhappiness if that person so chose. I didn't understand the underlying reason for the fierce conviction. I didn't understand where in the depths of my being it sprung. I did not question it. I just forged ahead.

The day had dawned cloudy again. Not so favorable as the clapping of the shudders against my window rang in my ear. A likely chance to ruin my trip. I'd promised Lawrence a lunch. Countless times I cancelled, until we both shelved the idea. We would just have to meet at practice. After all, the round trip would take an hour. I just didn't have the time or energy any longer to fight for an idea whose time in our era was nowhere near being accepted by anyone inside or outside our families.

The next week, I arrived early to camp to find Lawrence waiting near the entrance. We hugged briefly, then proceeded to the locker room to dress.

The whistle blew the start of practice. I shot a stern but endearing glance back at him. He sat on the bench ramrod straight as if transfixed, ignoring the call to action, so I grabbed my helmet and ran onto the field.

I'd have to think about the alternative from all angles before agreeing to his resolution. I wasn't ready. My life was like a puzzle with one final piece missing. The piece that fit perfectly into my already well-planned life.

We couldn't commit to each other. Love had nothing to do with our proposed actions. Too many commitment buckets to fill. I wish it were that easy, Lawrence once confided in me. I don't see a future for me in the world I was born into.

I wish it were that easy too, I thought, as I watched the coin flip land not in my team's favor. If I tossed a coin to decide once and for all the bucket into which my life landed and the direction I should go, would I be satisfied with the outcome?

The other side of the coin comprising that perfectly-planned life with a picket fence and small faces staring up at me would always tug at my thoughts, my heart; and my loins.

I left practice that day with no resolution on my end. But Lawrence couldn't wait for an answer.

That was six months ago.

rinreMr4T-dividerline-Resized.png

One Friday afternoon, the rain subsided. A trip to the nearby walking trail tugged at my heart. That was our meeting place when he was in town. I sat on the edge of the walkway looking out over the small lake. The ebb and flow of life.

I thought about my older sister, Leona. She reminded me of an image I once saw of a girl bursting through a glass enclosure. She came out of darkness into the light. To me, it felt as if the girl in the photo was declaring to the world her commitment to her true self. She had tossed off the dark cloud and walked into the shining rays of life. Into freedom.

How proud of Leona I was that day. I stood beside her, that tall and lanky woman, with a gorgeous face and body if I may give my sister a compliment. I glanced from one to the other, gauging the expressions of our sometimes livid and other times confused parents as she bask in her glory.

When she finished her lengthy speech of freedom identity, I grabbed her hand and placed it on my chest.

"Please, please take me with you!" I cried as she gathered her luggage for her out-of-state college. Knowing it was silly to even ask, I flashed her a half-smile. But on the inside, laughter was nowhere to be found.

Left with the burden of shouldering the outrage and hurt heaped upon my parents' fragile resolve, I shattered. No way would I disappoint them twice, so I shrank and buried myself deep within myself.

Why wasn't I born strong of spirit with a tenacity that defied all reason. "Be true to yourself, Jonathan," she had urged me in secret years ago. "Else your life won't be worth pursuing."

I lumbered alongside the throes of grief. Ever careful to contain the pangs of acknowledgement, it wasn't so much the loss itself of what had been that Lawrence and I shared, it was the slow awakening of the urges in another direction that led to his decision not to continue on in this life.

"It wouldn't be fair to either of us," he once professed. "We would forever doubt that our thoughts and desires lay elsewhere."

I thought carefully about Leona and Lawrence's advice.

Truth denied is not truth at all. Perhaps Lawrence knew this as he couldn't ignore the coin toss and live with the choice demanded by society.

Welcome back to my freewrite prompt story for this week. The photo that is the subject of the story spoke to me about a person who has just stepped from out of darkness into the light of one's own understanding:

Describe what you see.
This free-sourced image contains a young lady standing in the window. Bright rays are shining through. In the background is a dark and dreary skyline showing a glimpse of the Earth. Rocks or perhaps mountain ranges are underneath as she poses for a moment.

Describe what you feel.
I feel the image is illusory. It's meant to portray a type of freedom by stepping through from the outside of darkness into the light. Situated upon rocks and what appears to be mountain ranges is not a realistic accomplishment. I feel the young lady has turned a corner in her life. A new beginning by bringing light or an understanding, exposing a once hidden truth. The darkness portrays the old; while the light portrays the new.

Write a story or poem about what you think is going on. I leave with you my story for: A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 2/16/24.

A Picture is Worth A Thousand Words - 2/16/24.

No estaba preparado.

The coin toss to freedom was not just a random chance, but a deliberate choice to embrace his true self and live a life of authenticity. And as he walked into the unknown, he knew that he was finally free.

It is a deep and moving story, it speaks of the truth, of the brave, of those who decide to take the step of being happy despite everything and everyone, the sister is a determined person, she is a clear example that many should follow.👍🥲

What a thought-provoking piece. You place us right in Jonathan's thought and we feel his turmoils and understand his struggles to want to live the life he has advocated for.

Personal freedom is everything. Sometimes our environment or society may push us to conform to their expectations, thus robbing us of our identity and joy. If only Jonathan is as brave as Leona. I have one question though, who is Lawrence to Jonathan? A well-written story. Thanks for sharing. Take care and have a great day. !PIMP 💕

Lawrence is more than a friend I feel, but each is pulled in different directions and don't feel they can be together. They both play on the same team sport. Lawrence can't wait around forever for Jonathan to reveal himself, so he ends it. Jonathan is heartbroken.

Thanks for your visit. I appreciate your thoughtful analysis. Take care.

Sometimes, the freedom we so seek and embrace would not align with what we are expected of by our families and the societies we are a part of. Jonathan and Lawrence can't be together in that sense because it's morally decreed wrong.

Jonathan and Lawrence had these inner struggles within them of what is acceptable and right as against their selfish desires for each other.

That is correct @tranquil3. Whether it is selfish, I'm not the appropriate person to judge. What I can say is that they did indeed have struggles and confided in each other the outside pressures. Each handled the situation in his own way, with different outcomes. Jonathan grieved for Lawrence and the relationship they would no longer enjoy. But the larger, looming problem still faced Jonathan in admitting to his family and the world and choosing to live that way.

The obstacles he felt were too great to be his true self. Perhaps if he lives in a different era, he might have had a more accepting attitude and tolerance.

Thanks so much for your visit and kind words for my characters' plights. I appreciate your engagement and support.

Take care.

Heartbreaking ... and a testimony to empathy in a situation that you or me would never be in, but can yet understand the suffering of others ... this story is not far from recent news in my region.

Over fifty years ago, individuals didn't have a community they knew of or could identify with. They were alone to find solutions that fit their needs. We all may have had family members, friends, or know of others during that time who probably dealt with decisions affecting their lives and livelihood but were afraid to disclose them.

I know in my extended family we have embraced all family members.

Thanks for your visit. I appreciate it and your support.

Because I have grown up in San Francisco, I've seen variations of these things play out ... my pastor actually spoke of Bayard Rustin, and of how we have to tell the whole story and meet people where they really are ... to not single out people for hate when it took Christ to save us all from sin. Thank you for yet another compassionate look.

Your mention of Bayard also reminds me that it's hard to unveil one's self to family and friends. Even harder when the person is a powerful figure in the public eye at a time when tensions were already raw during the civil rights movement. Laying yourself bare was not acceptable and attempting to do good works for all society was questioned.

Time has rolled on to the 21st century, but has it become more welcoming in allowing everyone who wishes so to open up?

Thanks for your thoughtful comment and engagement. Take care.

Indeed truth denied isn't truth and it's hard if not unbearable to live for society especially if it comes to a free spirit.

Living one's life to the fullest in the constraints of society's view of appropriateness is difficult. Individuals who feel oppressed because they have no voice in who they love and how they want to live their lives in peace are the most disadvantaged.

Thanks for your visit and kind words. Take care.

At times we may always seek a different phrase of freedom which could never be understood by others, this is well portrayed in this story

We all should have the right to live life as we see fit. Individuals who seek approval from others should expect that the approval may not come and decide how to deal with it in the context of their choice of how they want to live their lives. Time is so precious on this Earth and fleeting because we will never know how much of it we have. Living life to the fullest should be the goal despite what society dictates as "normal".

I appreciate you stopping by to view my story and found the substance of the issue adequately portrayed. It means a lot to me to hear this. Thank you for your kind compliment.

Take care and have a good rest of your week.

Yes, it's hard to find joy or even peace @wrestlingdesires in your life living as you see fit, no matter what others think. This is especially when seeking guidance and support from family, and it's withheld for what others feel by societal pressures.
