I had no idea such a process existed. It sounds much like a plot point for a film such as Gattacca.

As a suggestion, with an article like this, it's worth explaining terms explicitely so people who aren't familiar with the situation are able to fully grasp the thrust of what you're saying.

Specifically the info I needed was on why having it done is such a crucial part of your culture.
When I was growing up we had a friend who died from sickle cell anemia so I'm familiar with the condition, but was not aware of how pernicious it was in some peoples.
It's not actually tag to culture. It's more of a precaution from bearing children with the "sickle cell" disease. It's more medically inclined than cultural consideration
