RE: MY FAVORITE MOVIE

Hi @kilvnrex

The contest link you have provided and your blog post have nothing in common. You seemed to have provided the wrong contest link.

All social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest etc) are not ORIGINAL sources of images. They are secondary sources of images and do not provide details of ownership and license details for verification. So citing those secondary sources for your blog posts is improper and will invite downvotes.

When you are writing a review or commentary about movies, and if you cannot find free images (usually it will be difficult) then the best way to handle it would be for you to rely on Fair Use doctrine, which allows you to use copyrighted images under certain circumstances.

You should then cite the original sources of the copyrighted images (where the details of the copyright owner and the license details are available) and include a Fair Use Notice at the end of your article to let the copyright owners know that you are using their images under the Fair Use doctrine. If you cannot find the original sources of the image, then it is best to use an image from Wikipedia and cite the wikipedia page for the source. In fact, usually you will find a public domain image in wikipedia and so the need to use the Fair Use Notice would not even arise.

In some jurisdiction like the US and the UK there are laws that provide that the copyright owner need to ask the infringing party to first take down the infriging image and can take action against an infringer only if the infringer refuses to do so. So it is common and prudent for the bloggers to provide their contact information in the Fair Use Notice.

Here is a draft of the Fair Use Notice that you can use freely:

FAIR USE NOTICE

This blog post may contain copyrighted images or GIFs whose use has not been specifically authorized by the copyright owners or their appointed agents.
If the images and GIFs used here are indeed copyrighted and not licensed to me then they are used here under the Fair Use exceptions to copyright laws of the respective jurisdictions including Section 107 of the Copyright Act, 1979 of the United States of America.
These laws allow use of copyrighted materials without the threat of infringement as an exception to copyright under certain circumstances. The scope of such allowed circumstances varies slightly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In general, in most cases, fair use would cover use for the purpose of commentary, criticism, reviews, news reporting and parody.
If you wish to use any of the images here under Fair Use doctrine for your own purposes that go beyond "fair use" in your jurisdiction you will be well advised to obtain the necessary permission from the copyright owner.
If your copyrighted material is used here and if you disagree to the use of the same on this blog post despite my claim to "fair use", please comment below or contact me at ..........................

Okay then thank you so much, I will make the above corrections right now. I've learned something about copyright notice through this comment. Thank you.

Excellent. One problem though.

The source should be

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vikings_Title.png

and not

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/99/Vikings_Title.png.

The former provides details of copyright and its origins, the latter does not.

If you notice, Wikipedia itself knows the image is copyrighted although it doesn't know who the actual owner is. Since the image is not licensed to Wikipedia it is using it under Fair Use doctrine. In fact, Wikipedia goes on to give reasons to justify why its use is Fair Use by stating the (a) The Purpose of Use in the Article, (b) it is a Minimal Use and that (c) its use has no commercial gains for it.

By using the image link I have asked you to use, you are making it clear to your readers and the copyright owner that you are also following Wikipedia's route.
